my habits changed so much when I realized stores will never run out of things that I want. there will always be something new that will occupy the space of the previous thing. And if reaaaally that one thing was so damn amazing and unique and I regret not buying it, I'm almost always able to find it second-hand. It took all the capitalist urgency out of me like a deflating balloon 😂

They don't know what holy grail or ride or die even mean.  No influencer knows what P.O.V. means either.

In the 90' s my country went through a severe economic crisis. One of the worst to my knowledge. I remember my mom getting up early in the morning to get us milk and eggs because there was a certain amount for the region per day. If you are late, you don't have food for a day. We used to make our own cottage cheese because there was nothing in the grocery stores. So when I hear "run to get smth", I immeadiately think about real essentials like food or medicine. The concept of non-essentials to be so desirable is very unusual to me. But then I think - maybe people nowadays need this feeling of lacking something and running to get it. So if they have never in their life experienced real shortage - they created it for themselves in the economy of overconsumption?

I used to teach financial education to kids (early elementary age, like 6-8 year olds) and it’s insane how much the “I need it!” affects kids. We did an exercise where students had a worksheet where they were supposed to circle and color in the images of needs. There were things like a coat, a bag of groceries, a house, a car and a bus (representing transportation costs). And there were things like a TV, a fast food meal, and toys. Most of the kids understood they didn’t need toys or meals out, but they all consistently got tripped up by the TV. We had to have a conversation about whether you could live without a TV. It kind of blew their minds. Not enough schools or parents talk about wants versus needs with kids and understanding the difference is absolutely necessary for understanding budgeting and spending priorities. But I’m starting to get the impression that a lot of adults also kind of don’t understand wants versus needs. (Wants and needs education can start with kids as young as 5 once they’ve kind of grasped the nature of things being concrete and having value. And once they understand delayed gratification. Once they kind understand that groceries come from the store and cars need gas to run and parents have to pay money for these things. They don’t need a lot of detail, they just need the basics and then as they get older and can do math with higher number values and are able to identify the values of currency, they can begin learning about spending priorities and saving up for items that they want.)

Honestly, when I think of a “holy grail” or “grail item”, I think of an item that you’ve wanted for a long time that is rare, expensive, or a combination of the two. Something you’ve been searching for and saving up for. Doesn’t mean it’s exactly the best item out there, but to be fair, I’m mainly thinking about retro tech and games, so the definition may be different for other niches. I obtained my “grail item” a few months back, and I don’t regret it at all. It makes me happy :D

The only life changing purchase I can think of was buying pill organizers. It's really bad if I forget to take my meds. Now I have a way to check.

If it's a 'viral', non-consumable I don't want it. I'll try food and drinks, but I almost never buy any thing else.

I think another one to add would be the phrase "you can never have too many ____,"  I usually hear this being in reference to books, blankets, and scarves, though other things too on and off line.  It is something I have caught my self saying to justify a purchase or to help someone else justify a purchase.

I truly wish people would stop buying Shein. I manage a small charitable thrift store. These items never sell and ultimately end up being thrown away or donated to homeless shelters/DV shelters. But, in our town, they have so many Shein items at the homeless shelters/domestic violence shelter - they are no longer accepting them. They have too many.
