I'm a Navy brat and had the privilege of living in many different places all over America and a few places around the world.  My dad was stationed at Gitmo  twice for a total of 6 years starting in the mid 1980's. Gitmo could be counted as shore duty, or sea duty either one. So after being stationed there for shore duty my dad accepted the offer to serve his sea duty there as well. It was  my favorite place we ever lived and I often wish I could return... I don't know if I'd enjoy it the same as an adult, as much as I did as a pre teen youth. It was a very small base. My dad seems to think I would not enjoy it there as an adult because of the size. But I have a lot really great memories from Gitmo and I'll always remember it fondly and consider myself very lucky to have spent part of my childhood there.

Visited for 35 minutes. It was a stop between Roosevelt Roads and Norfolk Naval Base during a MAC flight to go to my grandpa's memorial service.

My father who retired from the Navy was stationed there when they built the desalinization plant. It is worth a video by itself how they dismantled in CA and moved it piece by piece rebuilding it in Cuba. He said it was pure hell being there during that time since they had very limited fresh water. So bathing and washing clothes was rationed.

My father was attached to Fleet Training Group as a damage control/engineering training officer/ship rider, '70-'72.  I went to 7th and 8th grade at W.T. Sampson high school, now the Navy College on google earth.  We lived at the then Kittery Beach officer's housing, the small circle of 7(now 9) concrete, hurricane proof houses out Kittery Beach Rd. on the left at the end of the golf course.  Got qualified in scuba diving, fishing and catching tons of red snapper in the bay at Buoy One off Phillips Park.  Had lots of mackerel, langostino, grouper, and jack as well.  Learned to sail the rental Sunfish and Bullseye class boats at the marina.  Our first housing was on Radio Point(temporary old wood frame houses), learned semaphore in the Boy Scouts and used to converse with signalmen on the ships at the piers.  Lots of spearfishing, knew a Cuban guy that had langostino traps around the bay.  I've been to many Navy bases and housings, but GTMO was more fun for a teen than you could imagine.  Used to hang around the Marine tankers and was able to drive one of their M60A1's at their compound down at the end of Tarawa Rd.  Drank desalinated water and reconstituted milk while there.  No one wants to go to GTMO, but everyone I met down there loved being there.  Used to follow the marines after they'd have their training at some small hooches over the hill(we called it VC village) where we lived, picked up 5.56 and 7.62 blanks by the box and belt, as well as ration cans left behind.  Every once in a while we'd find the booby trap/trip wire kits left behind.  Killed a few guinea hens with my  .22, good eating.  Got to accompany my father on larger ships, he would hold their full power trials on their R&R runs to Jamaica and Haiti, as well as visit San Juan on the once a month embassy flights(left in the morning, came back in the evening).  Used to take a landing craft over to the other side of the bay, Hicacal beach, where there was an old spanish/american war fort that used to guard the entrance of the bay.  Every command had a lyceum with a different movie to see every night, we'd hitch hike to and from the movies.  Hell, we hitch hiked must about every where we went, unless we could lasso a parent to ride us somewhere, then almost always hitch hiked back.

The McDonalds has chicken wings. Also hasn't gone through a renovation since it opened. Quite the time capsule.

Great Job Ryan! Your facts were on point. I was fortunate to be able to go to GiTMO in 2004 on a private civilian job. Loved everyday of the eight months I was there. Took some time to get used to the 25 and 35 MPH speed limit. Fun times .
