As a teenager I saw in one of the Hollywood rags the Mae West was turning 70 so I wrote her a bday card.  She responded by mailing me an autographed pic! I still have it and the self-addressed envelope.

She was one of the greatest to ever live. She was witty, brilliant and so damned beautiful. She was one hell of a woman

My mother told me she saw her when she was in New York City in an elevator. And she said Mae was much more gorgeous in person.

My dad was a cab driver in the 30s and drove Mae West once. She gave him a $50 tip which was a hell of a tip for even now!

Not many people know, but Mae West was the highest paid star during the the depression, commanding 500k per movie. She single handedly saves Paramount from bankruptcy, she was calling the shoots on her movies long before it was fashionable for a woman to have power in Hollywood, she was the real thing, a woman way ahead of her time.

She once claimed she would never steal another woman's man, even if she could, because she preferred getting one of her own - classy.

The only time she  breaks character is when she spoke of her mother. I could feel her sadness in that brief moment. Beautiful woman.
