  Back in the early 70&apos;s I met Tom competing in a control line model air craft contest ! we were flying in the SPEED class ! &nbsp;we hung out a whole day before we found out we both played guitar ! Tom did tell me he was building his own FX pedals at the time ! Years pass by until I heard the first BOSTON album and reading Tom&apos;s name on it instantly put a smile on my face ! &nbsp;still today his X-100 sound is incredible &nbsp;!

  It is crazy that nearly 50 years later we are still chasing down the sound. &nbsp;Boston&apos;s first album 1976, I was 6 years old. I took my first guitar lesson at 14.

  Man, I perfected my &quot;Boston&quot; tone decades ago. Marshall, boost, mid-boost, Boss Spectrum etc... Pretty easy

  Tom’s sound is so special. It sounds different on the first 2 Boston albums when compared to 3rd stage.. &nbsp; 3rd stage sounds like he used the rockman x100 but that sounds different to me than what’s on the first album.. &nbsp; You got some cool clues and your work could be the foundation for someone else to solve the riddle.. &nbsp;Thanks for the research

  you had it! ...all you needed to do was use a -24db shelf on those lows instead of completely high passing lows ...same thing, but gives control over how much cut instead of completely cutting lows

  Probably the most amazing thing about Tom&apos;s sound is how the hell did he had that idea to start with ?<br>It&apos;s not like he had a reference prior to him.<br>Nobody sounded like that before him, yet he did all his wizardry to create this new thing out of the blue.<br>Putting all the technical stuff together to achieve a tone is one thing...<br>Like if we attempt to recreate Tom&apos;s tone, at least we have a target.<br>We can hear the end result from the OG recordings.<br>But Tom didn&apos;t have that.<br>He had that goal in his head and in his head alone.<br>That&apos;s the part that I find very interesting.<br><br> I found ways to recreate Boston&apos;s sound pretty convincingly.<br>Even all the Rockman stuff doesn&apos;t provide it, even though it&apos;s close.<br>The magic really resides in the EQ and compression.<br>I wouldn&apos;t say that I nailed it 100%, of course, but even Tom himself doesn&apos;t seem to be able to <br>constantly recreate his own sound.<br>As albums came out, there are clear differences and changes.<br>He moved away from loud Marshalls and cumbersome set ups to use his own<br>self made gizmos which are brilliant, but don&apos;t sound like what&apos;s on the first album.<br><br>In any matter, Tom is a total genius in so many spheres.<br>Guitar, keyboards, bass, engineer, producer, composer, electronics wiz, arranger, etc...<br>The guy can wear so many hats it&apos;s uncanny.

  Nice video man! Getting sounds is always a rabbit hole. It&apos;s the &apos;embracing the journey&apos; part that&apos;s hardest I think. One tip from an old pro, never let &apos;that doesn&apos;t look right&apos; get in the way of the sound you&apos;re after. Best wishes!

  ALL I had was Tom Scholtz tone when I started, because dad gave me a Tom Scholtz Soloist, so I could practice without making everyone in my house cranky.
