Medieval foundations last because they drain instead of fighting the water. The buildable version is in the guide: https://medieval-wisdom.com

Would you start with a trench, lime mortar, or the concrete mix?

As an Englishman that has worked on a wide variety of house construction, what impacted upon me the most was, housing in Sheffield, after adding an extension to a 1900 terraced house on a substantial gradient, this was a two storey house built upon a foundation of six bricks sitting on a compacted slag foundation of around 12 inches of thickness, absolutely no movement occurred to that house that has stood for over a century, building control has no experience of this type of construction and cannot understand it

I think laws and codes developed to favor short term profit over what might be best, choosing to create a system that requires people to continuously pay money for it. This pattern repeated over generations broke the passage of knowledge of many practices. Using natural materials, by hand, there are many examples from around the world that have stood the test of time. Building practices to cool heat and light a home, abound.

Wright did not discover this, he simply rediscovered something known for thousands of years based on observation of where it was already used….rail tracks!!

We have not forgotten but modern building codes made to suit the concrete suppliers need superseded sense. Try building a Quonset Hut garage in modern suburbia.

Its not that we choose not to use crushed stone for foundation material…its the building code that dictates we use a poured concrete slab and footers…

As with so many of Wright's ideas, this rediscovery of the rubble trench was probably also Marion Mahony's. He took credit for a lot of work she did, so it wouldn't surprise me...

It's not been forgotten. It's been sacrificed on the altar of progress in a time where concrete was seen as the answer to all building challenges. My 150 year old house is built like this. The advantage: no creeping moisture, no mould growing on the walls. Disadvantage: heavy farming machines rumbling by on the road 4 m away from the house are cracking the walls. But even a concrete foundation might not withstand, since nobody could predict 20 ton vehicles racing around with 50 km/h
