  According to the TSR box set Empire of Magic, Karsus was so single-minded in his research against the Phaerimm and prolonging Netheril, he concluded that a mortal could not gain the knowledge and power in his lifetime to accomplish it.  To that end, he became a lich at the mere age of 25!

  Comfortable from the hindsight of the modern age, arrogant mages often sneer, &quot;Why did Karsus anchor his spell on Mystra? What an obvious blunder&quot;. With smug certainty they dismiss his choice, blind to their own hubris. They assume a centuries-old archwizard, unparalleled in power and intellect, overlooked what seems &quot;obvious&quot; to their casual observation. <br> <br>But, it had to be Mystra, what little we know tells us this much is true. Circumstance, not simple pride, is what drove Karsus. This choice was not mere oversight--certainly not one minds less keen than his (and this will be almost entirely all of them) could spot. Whatever his miscalculation, whatever unforeseen consequence arose, it escaped a depth of thought very few have any hope of ever reaching. All other paths were closed to him. <br> <br>Mystra, for reasons that remain too difficult to unravel, was the only option. So where did Karsus go wrong? It likely was not in his choice of anchor for the spell, but in believing his power sufficient to contain the forces he sought to control. Believing that even his unmatched genius could anticipate all possibilities. He miscalculated not the &quot;how&quot;, but the &quot;after&quot;. Yet, given all that was at stake and the grim future foretold, was he truly wrong to take this gamble? Alas, this topic remains one of major debate among the wisest of sages of the arcane.

  This tragic but beautiful story about the end of a civilization feels a little more prescient than I wish it did.
