  I do the best of both worlds. Split the breath weapon damage into both the elemental damage type it had in life and the other half being necrotic. If somehow a Topaz dragon goes dracolich, it will do only but full necrotic damage.<br>I love that Dracolich is a template. Along with Shadow Dragons, Hollow Dragons, Death Dragon, Ghost Dragons, Bone Golem dragons ( which are just that, animated bones no essence or soul of the former dragon in it )

  So far we&apos;ve seen what goes into making a regular mortal into a lich, and how the process needs to be not just altered but altogether different for the Illithid (&quot;Dead &apos;hoon walking&quot; as the duergar would say.) <br>Dragons are an altogether different beast, not only do they have souls like the mortals do, their entire body is connected to the Weave on a fundamental level, not so much that they are adversely affected by being momentarily cut off from it, but more like a sort of funnel for magical energy, or a sponge. <br><br>That the process for them could be simplified into a step by step affair with clearly marked margins of error is unsurprising, they are already so magically attuned that replacing a large portion of that with negative energy and stuffing their soul into a gem would be child&apos;s play for a deity, and can be split into multiple parts so that even a few dozen moderately competent mortals could pull it off, as long as they&apos;ve got a guide on how to do it and at least one sufficiently powerful spellcaster.<br><br>The detail that proto-Dracoliches lose the ability to speak is also interesting, it&apos;s probably connected to their relationship with arcane magic, they literally already have a whole spellbook encoded into their brain, and they likely trigger spells using the same areas of their brain that they use for speaking. Since both are by necessity unique to each individual, if they inhabit a corpse that isn&apos;t their own, there are incompatibilities between their soul and the brain that they are currently stuck with, so neither works.
