Best gardening channel on YouTube. I learned a lot from you this summer. All the best from Regina.

I plant around 1000 hardneck garlic every year in MB. I plant from the same bulbs that my grandfather planted for a half century. My planting location is full sun, with the rows having a 3 year rest between planting cycles.

I've always had my best results when rainfall is average, minimal competition, and plenty of fresh organic matter during planting. Typically, I don't water them and just provide mulch while rainfall does the rest. The mulch keeps the soil cool and gives a nice buffer during extended dry periods.

Hardneck garlic has historically done well in my no-till beds, but I definitely noticed a reduction in size from my usual fist-sized garlic bulbs (due to the severe drought in our area this year).

A reduction in moisture between scape removal and harvest time gives me the best results, but I still can't control the weather - despite my best attempts.

I accidently flooded the area of garden with the garlic in it early in season, didn't water again till mid summer. The garlic heads are huge and beautiful the flavor and smell is extraordinary.

I wondered why when I planted two rows of garlic I got varying sizes. It stumped me how can some be a nice large head and some be super small. I planted them all at the same depth because I didn't know any better. So thank you.

Been growing garlic for years. Love the video, I must say after all the experimentation I've done one cannot overlook the clove sizes and the size of your bulbs. Bigger cloves are bigger bulbs. Succession plays a big role. She really nails the truth that hardneck orphio phenotypes are more closer to the wild type than domesticated soft neck. They don't mind a little stress. One other thing I'd like to share is people forget this fact and lavish their garlic with nitrogen and you grow leaves instead of bulbs. They need stress to bulb up

I did red Russian. Best garlic I’ve grown, full sun, regular water.

Ashley, the links in the description are wrong… the 1st is for Sweet Potatoes and the 2nd is for Radishes.

My native soil is sand so the drying out period allows for more friability in the soil. So as the garlic takes up water the soil dries and puts less pressure on the bulb so the bulb can expand into the space.

I grow my garlic in full sun and produce massive bulbs… 30+ Celsius dry summers….definitely do not over water and never plant anything else in the bed with it.

I love growing garlic. Makes great gifts and I grow enough to almost have a year supply. I have a hard time curing it properly some years.

Here in southern Alberta, I grew red Russian and a 'german circa 1940's' garlic. The latter is still in the ground as I planted it in early spring. My red Russian didn't do as well as last year, but I contributed that to too much shade. I have Alberta Rose bushes and 2 nan king cherries to the west of them. Next year more sun(opposite side of the garden). excellent video as usual Ash!!
