  I have had a strange garlic experience. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Two falls ago at the last minute I could not find any hard necks to plant, so I threw in a row of soft neck as an experiment. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Living in North Dakota I expected nothing and just a few shouts came up which just died down to the ground. &nbsp; Well, I planted my hard necks as usual last fall, and they came as usual this past spring. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Well, the surprise was the soft necks from 2 falls before came surging up into giant plants and outdid the hard necks and produced as you say the biggest honkers I&apos;ve ever grown. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;All I do for winter protection is place a few inches of straw for protection, remember this is zone 4.

  I’ve watched a couple of your videos and as someone who has grown garlic for more than 10 years, your recommendations are solid. The only thing missing is specifying what kind of compost you are using: yard waste, composted manure, mushroom. I’m sure you get the idea

  Greetings from Saint Petersburg. I grow more than 10 varieties of garlic on my property, many of which have no name and were selected by me personally. I noticed the following things: 1) garlic, which has managed to take root well, does not die even in the coldest winters 2) on light sandy soil, very rich in organic matter, garlic does not grow very well, it greatly increases the greens, but the bulbs are smaller than we would like. 3) garlic grows best in heavy soil into which organic matter is added in the form of plant residues and compost, but only on the surface, without plowing into the depth. 4) It is best to keep it under mulch all season, especially during the period of active growth. Observing these requirements, every spring I get very powerful thick garlic shoots as thick as a man&apos;s thumb, while the leaf color is a rich dark green, and the garlic tastes great.
