In 1972 my American family moved to a small country that was still largely rural and poor. I was 7. My father had decided he wanted to know about this new rock music that young people were excited about. Before leaving the US he gave a used record store kid $100 bucks and said: set me up with the best albums (how'd you like to be that kid?) , and my father also bought a nice stereo.
We lived in the city, but even there every other family had a transistor radio at best, so they also weren't hearing good music. British or American rock wasn't on the radio, just local pop and folk.
So there we were, blasting these albums all summer and every kid came to play in our back yard because the music was like something from another planet. By the time school started, kids would say "Shhhmp!" to each other in greeting, as John does in "Come Together," to signal that they were part of the in crowd.
Yet for me, the apotheosis of all the cool, now that I think about it, the musical groove that made me feel like "This is SO COOL," was Paul's bass line on "Come Together."
That is my story, you owe me a thumbs up for reading this far.
List of albums that record store kid got us available upon request. For years they were all I knew of music.

Paul's bass on the last she's so heavy section is SO damn good. His evolution as a bass player from the band's early tunes to that moment is such a complete transformation. He's so unhinged here with his runs, I wonder if John ever thanked him.

Alice Cooper said the thing that made the Beatles the best is that they never played over each other They were in perfect synch. Once John stopped singing, George started his solo; once the solo ended, the bass line came back in. They never stepped on each other's toes in the music.

I think of the millions of people who first heard this album in 1969. Here in 2025, it still astonishes new listeners.

Abbey Road is without any question one of the great Rock LPs of all time. In my mind it's top 5 and could very well be no. 1.

I was a British teenager in the 60s and The Beatles were a huge part of my life. I just loved them for their sound, but now I'm in my 70's and I have listened to music experts dissect their work I realise they were geniuses

The layered overdubs that wrap up "I Want You (She's so Heavy)" are like being lovingly punched in the face by symphonic soup. Just. So. GOOD.
