Spent 53 years in the US. Spent the last 2 in South Brazil. I should have left YEARS ago. Quality of life is much better here.

I m brazilian, living in metropolitan capital of this state and can assure we are plenty of cities of a high quality of life here. But not speaking portughese or a bad choice can be terrible. This guy has something that makes all difference: seems he has support of an well structured family behind him. Rio Grande and Pelotas are very nice towns!

Welcome to "Big River", my lovely hometown. Every year I take my vacation and return home to recharge my batteries. The best definition ever of my country comes from our genius Tom Jobim:

Living in the US is good, but it's crap. Living in Brazil is crap, but it's good.

There are many very good spots in Brazil to settle. The country is huge. I recommend São José dos Campos in São Paulo state, where Embraer planes are designed and built.

You made a good choice; RS offers a good quality of life and is relatively safe, and with your income in dollars, you won't have any trouble with the cost of living. Best wishes to both of you.

I lived in Rio Grande back in 1984. My Dad was a military from the navy , I was 14 years old , I assume your wife is from Rio Grande. Rio Grande was pretty quiet and small compared to Rio , my home town.

10:22 The reality of cold weather and housing in Brazil is often misunderstood because the climate is completely different from the US.
Most of Brazil doesn't experience months of freezing temperatures. Cold spells are usually short, so installing expensive central heating simply isn't economically rational.
Brazilian homes are also typically built with brick and concrete, which have high thermal mass. This works well in hot weather but can make homes feel very cold during short winter cold fronts, especially without insulation.
Instead of central heating, Brazilians use localized solutions: fireplaces, portable heaters, radiant floor heating, or increasingly, mini-split heat pumps.
It's not that Brazilian homes are "not prepared for the cold." They're largely designed around the climate they actually experience. The same economic logic applies to heating infrastructure as it does to insulation and HVAC systems in colder parts of the US.
