I worked in 1964-65 after graduation for Bethlehem Steel Lackawanna NY in the Blast Furnaces. Of course everything was automated. The objective was to produce molten iron to be sent to the open hearth to be made into steel, not to make molds as is being done so effectively in this video. When it was time to "tap" the furnace, the base of the furnace was burned into using oxygen at the end of a steel pipe. We wore asbestos coats steel toe shoes and WELDERS GLASSES!!. The molten iron flowed down dried sand coated runners. The iron went into railroad cars for transport to the open hearth. When the iron finished, gates were closed and opened and the slag was sent down runners to slag rr cars. Safety was stressed for everybody as it was a dangerous place. My favorite part of the operation was to go to the ore docks to watch the iron ore and limestone being unloaded by buckets and gantries from the long Great Lakes ore carriers. At the end s Melroe Bobcat was dropped in to the hold to scoop out the last bit.

Wow. This family works so hard. Everything done by hand. Even the wood was cut hand. Brute labor mixed with precision!

It’s refreshing to see people not enslaved to debt and possessions and being self-sufficient in their ways. Family & friends at the top of the list is number one, after that life falls into place
