The Soviet Union knew within hours. They waited days to tell the world. ☢🌍
Meanwhile, radioactive clouds drifted across Europe — and governments had no idea what was coming.
39 years later — do you think we know the full truth about Chernobyl? Or is the real story still buried?

It did not go into fusion. It was a runaway fission reaction

Just an observation: ot certainly was Not a "state of the art" facility. The thing had no containment structure. Pretty basic requirement in that era.😮

Nobody does safety tests like the Soviets.

Look at this place, 50,000 people used to live in the city, now it’s a ghost town, never seen anything like it

The USSR built reactors on the cheap. No one would call Chernobyl 'state of the art'.

Watching those poor sods carrying one shovel full at a time of radioactive graphite off the roof of reactor 3 was agonizing. It would have been so much more efficient if they'd set out wheelbarrows and had them each use their 90 seconds to throw several shovel loads into the wheelbarrow until the thing filled up, then sent one person out to use their 90 seconds to dump it. The way they were doing was the height of inefficiency. Also, they should have started with the material closest to the opening over reactor 4, then gradually worked their way farther back, instead of starting farthest away and having to walk over the entire pile with one shovel load each to reach the opening.

"State of the Art"? My Ass!! Chermobyl was just a tricked up version of the very first nuclear pile that Fermi and Oppenheimer built in Chicago in the 1940s.
