Yeah, this is for people like me who started saving WAY later than my 20s. Thanks so much, Brian and Bo 🙏🏾

I’m 51 and just now am beginning to invest for the future. I spent my late 20s as a stay at home mom, my 30s as a single mom barely getting food and shelter stable, and my 40s crawling out of debt and building a career. I’ve finally made it close to the median income and should have both kids out of the house and supporting themselves by spring. Still, saving 30% of my gross income looks impossible. I’m struggling to get to 15% due to dental work needs, a car that needs replacing (stacking cash to avoid a car payment), and high utility bills because my landlord insists on replacing ancient junk with just slightly less ancient junk (aka rusted, used air handlers and condensing units and single pane windows). Also, throw in saving for moving expenses when the lease is up next spring and the kids and I part ways to get our own places.

Thanks for covering this subject. I didn’t start saving for my retirement until I was 45. I’m 55 and saving 40% to catch up. Keep encouraging everyone. They shouldn’t give up! Anyone can reach financial independence.

I’m 25, in my final year of law school, and getting married this year. I have a job lined up after graduation paying $120K, bonus between 12K and 30K depending on performance, a 3% 401(k) match, and I can choose Roth or traditional. My fiancée makes about $38K, and we have fully joint finances. We have roughly 15K in HYSA and Roth IRA combined.

The big issue: I’ll graduate with about $180K of student loans, all from law school, at roughly an 8.5% weighted interest rate.

How would you recommend we build our budget now and once I start working? Should I refinance the student loans if I can get the rate substantially lower? And if I can refinance into the 5–6% range, how would you balance aggressively paying off the loans versus investing beyond the 401(k) match?

My instinct is to take the full match, build appropriate emergency reserves, and then attack the debt, but at 25 I also don’t want to sacrifice too many early compounding years. Where would this debt fall in the Financial Order of Operations?

Sorry Bo but Brian had it right the first time, my retirement savings are way closer to being a mythology than a methadology...

Wife and I ages 38 and 43 have liquid net worth of 1.395 million. Renting has been wonders for our investing journey. Buying a home in NYC would have ensured we couldn't contribute anything to our retirement plans, beyond what our employer contribute regardless of whether we contribute or not.

I turned 68 this year. Last month alone I made $296,000, but the moment that made me cry wasn't the money - it was seeing my whole family around one dinner table after everything we survived together. There were years I truly thought life was over for me. Keep fighting. Your current situation can change in one season.
