  That song is a true story, they went to Montreux to record music, the Rolling Stones had a mobile studio and were there at the time.  Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention were playing a concert at the casino/hotel and an idiot shot a flare gun.  "Funky" Claude was the entertainment director at the casino, he pulled a lot of people out, saved a lot of lives

  One of the most recognized guitar riffs in rock. &nbsp;Song based a true story of them going to record their Machine Head album in Montreux, Switzerland on December 4, 1971 when a guy with a flare gun burned the place down during a Frank Zappa show.<br>Recommend my favorite Deep Purple song- &nbsp;Highway Star.

  On June 4 ,2007, 1,683 guitarists shattered the Guinness world record for number of people playing the same song at once. The song chosen to play was Smoke on the Water. They all met at a minor league baseball field in Kansas City Kansas. I was guitarist # 619. It was an awesome experience. There is a YouTube video of it named Kansas City Breaks World Record. I am proud to have been part of it.

  Deep Purple has a huge catalog of amazing music. &nbsp;Child In Time live is a necessity. &nbsp;I saw them in Germany highlighting Monsters Of Rock, Cinderella, Ratt, Dio and Metallica were the other major bands, all were great but Deep Purple blew everybody away.

  Ian Gillan wrote the lyrics after the band witnessed a fire during a Frank Zappa concert at the Casino at Montreux, Switzerland. The smoke on the water was the smoke over Lake Geneva after &quot;some stupid with a flare gun, burned the place to the ground.&quot;
