David's story reminds me a lot of King Arthur. Probably was a warlord who made a name for himself, may or may not have united a few kings to fight off a common enemy, and then the story gets retold and romanticized and becomes a whole legend.

A David-like warlord may have existed, but<br>the biblical King David is a literary and<br>political construction. The Tel Dan Stele<br>proves a dynastic label, not a historical<br>founder. David's stories are propaganda<br>engineered to legitimize Judah's<br>nonarchy, sanitize its founder, and create<br>a unified national myth. Archaeology<br>supports a small southern warlord, not a<br>king of a united monarchy. The biblical<br>David is 80-95% literary invention.

I remember as a religious kid reading the story of David and Bathsheba, and being horrified even though I was too young to actually understand the unspoken parts. They definitely glossed over the details in my Sunday School!
