The king is having a kind of drunken party with his buddies. That is why the queen doesn't want to show up.

What gets me is that Haman's suggestion when he thinks he's going to be honoured includes a guy walking around behind his fancy horse announcing "So shall it be done to the man the king desires to honour," and then when it's Mordecai getting honoured the king makes him do the announcing.

It reminded me of A Horse and His Boy.
A tale in the middle with no connection to Narnia.

Purim is a very fun holiday, and the various aspects tie into this story in interesting ways. The costumes hint at the them of hidden identity- Esther taking on a false name, but also the hidden role of G!d in the story.

One is also religiously obliged to get good and drunk on Purim. Specifically, one must lose the ability to distinguish between the phrases "blessed be Mordecai" and "cursed be Hamon". This expresses a sense of euphoria in the revenge fantasy, and is often interpreted in a cautionary light- ie be careful about getting drunk on revenge, because you you might lose the ability to distinguish between helping your community and hurting your enemies.

Also when the story is read, everyone boos loudly whenever Harmon's name is mentioned, and uses noisemakers to drown out his name (blotting out Amalek) and there are some other crowd participation aspects, like some sort of liturgical Rocky Horror showing.

Also you make cookies called Hamantaschen which are so-so.

I think part of Esther being Mordecai's cousin instead of daughter is to make it more plausible that everyone knows Mordecai is a Jew but has no clue about Esther.

Props to Tantalus in Percy Jackson for getting me to look up where Anatolia is. Now I can make fun of Dan M for placing us in Türkiye.

Another fun Purim tradition some practice: drinking enough so that one can no longer tell Haman from Mordecai. After one has heard "the whole megillah," of course.

Great podcast Gentlemen. But there are a few things I'm surprised you didn't cover.
1) Esther's original Jewish name of Hadassah.
2) the insane height of Hamman's Gallows at nearly 75 feet. Taller than most buildings at the time. Like one of those "Drop rides" at an amusement park.
3) P.Diddy levels of Oil baths theses women went through in the beauty contest.
4) Esther 2 (electric Boogaloo) in some Catholic Bibles.

Please cover those if you do a sequel. @dataoverdogma

When you introduce yourselves as Dan and Dan, I always think about They Might Be Giants introducing themselves as John and John. Love it.
