Couldn't it just be that the chin didn't develop at all, but rather the teeth just pulled in more and more to allow for better language, while the jaw length stayed longer because there wasn't an evolutionary need for it to also retract? This would be evidenced by the fact that we are still adapting to the smaller teeth shelf with our wisdom teeth not having enough room in many individuals.

Just my thought, another thing only humans have is speech and if you hold your chin as you speak, you'll notice there's a lot of musculature moving to facilitate that speech.
