A few years ago I traveled through Vietnam for three months. Great country and friendly people! But also the worst food poisoning I've ever had! Down for 5 days. And I primarily ate only vegetarian or vegan food the entire three months .. because of the company I was keeping, who was vegetarian. Unfortunately, the three Vietnamese people I was with also got sick. It was at a buffet restaurant in Hoi An. I guess the lesson here is, don't eat at buffets where the food may have been sitting longer than you know, and instead choose foods that are made fresh and in front of you. Seems obvious, and the place we ate at seemed very clean. But yeah .. that sucked lol.

I visited Vietnam two times in the last few years. I ate a lot of different food everywhere. I never had problems. I avoided touristy restaurants and preferred small food stalls with one or two dishes. I never had problems. And I really loved sitting on these tiny plastic chairs with tiny tables where lots of locals were around.

Good food tips Cal. The issue of ingredients like cooked/uncooked meat sitting around for hours unrefrigerated is common throughout Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand, etc. Not much you can do about it except to try to look for cleaner places (minimal trash, clean hands/gloves, etc.) with lots of locals and high turnover. The upside is that many of these places sell the tastiest and most authentic local food.

Well done Cal! NEVER eat street food that isn’t cooked in front of you (no previously “cooked” foods). Google reviews at high numbers have been reliable for me. 😊

I love Bun Cha. Surprisingly I have yet to see a Vietnamese restaurant here in the US that has it.
