I often sparred with guys that trained very unregularly, like once or twice per month, and sometimes they were high grades like brown or black belts, but even as a purple or brown belt I absolutely mauled them and they seemed pretty ok with it. And I always thought "how can he be so bad with that belt? I would either get back into it for good, or never show up again, if it was to come every 3 or 4 weeks to just loose like that to a lower grade".

Today as a black belt myself I saw how much of douchebag I was being. They were not injured, and they started earlier than I did. They're mindset about training was just different than mine. They were not in the grind like I was, coming religiously 3 times a week to the same classes, fighting through injuries, dedicated on gym and diet to improve, etc. They were just gifting themselves with a training session on some free time they managed to get. They were not there to win anything, just to enjoy it. They knew they would probably get beaten by someone that was training more, but they just didn't care. They were not chasing anything but having fun and staying healthy. Now that I achieved the black belt I'm becoming that guy. Focusing on the long run, and the goal is not get the next belt anymore, or beat this or that guy, but to keep training as long as I can. If I can still step inside the mats and roll after my 60, mission accomplished.

“It shouldn’t be all or nothing. It should be all or something.” That applies way beyond jiu-jitsu. A lot of people probably don’t need to quit so much as change the relationship they have with training. Hard lesson, though, especially when your inner 22-year-old still thinks every Tuesday roll is Troy.

I finally quit BJJ after a neck injury that will require MRI for further inspection! Think about your health and don't compromise it! Wish me luck too!

I’m a purple belt who’s been doing it for 10 years. Life gets in the way sometimes…and for longer than you’d like at times. I had a black belt give me a good piece of advice one time. He said to make jiu jitsu part of your life like anything else. I don’t DO it anymore than I DO the laundry. It just is. It’s a fabric of my life. You can take 3 years off without quitting. Quitting is a state of mind. If you wanna quit, that’s cool. If you need time away, that’s cool too. Every journey is unique.

Absolutely fantastic episode guys, really well done.

A beautiful line from Dan, quoting Achilles in Homer’s Odyssey. Odysseus encounters Achilles in the Underworld and tries to comfort him by highlighting his continued, heroic status among the dead.. prompting the response:

"Say not a word in death's favor; I would rather be a paid servant in a poor man's house and be above ground than king of kings among the dead."

This was actually a powerful and wonderfully humbling part of the pod and honestly super impressive by Dan to relate that particular quote from the book to the subject matter - literally giving your life for temporary glory - but this quote reveals what most probably aren't willing to admit. I tend to doubt that body builders who died young would, if given another chance, continue down that path.

Life is long, the candle is burning, and there is so much depth and joy to life that we can lose if we don't take care of ourselves.

Thank you for breathing some sanity to the subject.

Dan is absolutely fantastic, and a really interesting individual.

Best video yet, and I think about this topic often. I want to train for as long as I can because I love what the art gives back. But I'm often guilty of pushing through injury or pushing my body past its limits leading up to a competition.

I think it's important to always keep a long term view, and Dan is right that is the ultimate form of discipline. It's not who's best it's who's left.

I felt after a year or so, I was only training for the sport and there wasn’t much of a workout upside compared to injury risk. Muay Thai on the other hand was a constant workout, could train solo on a bag and weirdly a lot less bruises and risks of catastrophic injuries compared to bjj

Was lucky enough to start my bjj journey along with my son, with Daniel when he was a blue belt along with Nick Brooks(purple belt)and Chris Hearn( blue belt),
Dan was a great teacher even then and a great competitor he made classes interesting and answered any questions, was there when we trained at the university then at the boat, then in bunns lane then when mill hill bjj moved to where they are now,
Was lucky enough to keep on training even though I'm now 58 twenty yrs later and still love bjj,
I put this down to having great teachers and seeing them train day in day out and pass on their knowledge,
It was a privilege to have trained with him,
Thx Dan Osssss

    1 view 1 minute. Damn I’m early. Let’s go.

Edit, I had two bulging discs in my lower back causing excruciating siatic nerve pain all the way down to my foot and I had an MRI and the doctor told me that I should probably stop doing BJJ. I went that same night and kept going. The pain went away. That’s my recovery. Ignore it and hope it goes away. Yes it is foolish. I get it. At this point I’m a 4 stripe brown belt. Nothing is stopping me now haha
