Peasants find a huge bone in the ground, half the size of a man. It's unclear whose it belongs to. But the landowner takes this unusual artifact and puts it to good use: he places it by the fireplace as a screen to prevent sparks from flying onto the floor. Meanwhile, the peasants, after some thought, decide: it's the bone of a BOGATYR. Specifically, it's Dobrynya Nikitich's rib. The fact that the bone is shaped like a shoulder blade doesn't bother anyone. For several decades, the rib of the hero Dobrynya faithfully serves as a fireplace damper in a Ryazan estate. Only much later does it become clear that it's not a hero at all. It's a mammoth's shoulder blade. Today's episode is about how people have been finding the bones of extinct animals in the ground for thousands of years—and inventing giants, saints, dragons, and heroes to go with them. We spoke with Anton Nelikhov, a historian of science and collector of fossil folklore, about the origins of the Cyclopes myth and what dwarf elephants have to do with it. What, in fact, has been ground into powder and drunk in China for a thousand years under the guise of "dragon bones." And why dinosaur skeletons in museums are actually plastic replicas, while the real bones sit side by side in display cases, looking rather unsightly. We also discussed: can you buy a real dinosaur on Avito? What happened at the end of the Permian period and why it was more terrifying than an asteroid impact on the dinosaurs? How fossils saved people from famine in the Volga region in 1891? And why in a traditional Russian village, you could safely drink from a puddle. And most unexpectedly, where do we get dreams about flying and falling if we've never jumped higher than a stool?
