The problem with many rural towns is that they close early. Sometimes, you don't have the time to cover the miles to get there before it closes. I have made it a must to have an emergency meal that doesn't require re-hydrating. There is nothing worse than getting to your destination, cold, hungry and in the middle of nowhere. Always carry and have food on you for long rides. It's literally survival. Without that energy, you can't even abort your ride and head to the nearest town.

Everything you say makes sense. Sometimes the most valuable gear is not the most expensive. I cycled solo 7,000 km (4,300 miles) across Europe finishing 600 km inside the Artic circle . Favourite piece of gear ? The waterproof helmet cover that cost me $9.99 from K-Mart. Like a shower cap that stretches over your helmet. Fluorescent green with reflective strips. Kept me dry, warm and safe.

Being "clipped in" switched to flats after thirty years in clips. What a revelation, flats are just as efficient and make everything about bike packing more comfortable.

Just carry super energy dense food. Powdered peanut butter, no cook sausage, trail mix, chocolate bars, premade honey energy packs, instant mashed potatoes, instant eggs, powdered cream, oats, protein powder, dried fruits/berries, bouillon cubes, tobasco, tortillas, dehydrated home made meals, etc

You are spot on! At age 77 and and experienced USA and EuroVelo long distance cyclist. I now opt for a hotel whenever possible. However I carry a 3 man tent and keep my bicycle inside the tent when hotels are not an option. Thanks for your wonderful video.

When I did that route in 2023 I had a full cook set and an aeropress. I haven’t brought cooking stuff since because i don’t mind cold food. but nothing beats hot coffee in the morning

I always take a synthetic base layer and wool socks that I only wear in camp. And I always take a puffy, even in a heat wave!

For an 11-day trip I would carry less food and plan a replenishment stop somewhere.<br>My last real bike packing trip was in 1992 from LA to Alaska and back. &nbsp;Back then I spent days at libraries to plan for weather conditions and location to get food. &nbsp; No electronics, just a point-and-shoot camera.
