“I’m gonna have those notes stuck in my head for weeks…” Yeah, for those of us of a certain age, those notes have been stuck in our heads for decades…

The Lakota & Kiowa story of Devil's Tower: Seven girls playing outside were chased by giant bears. They climbed atop a low rock and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. The rock rose toward the heavens, and as the bears furiously tried to climb after them, they left deep claw marks in the stone. When the girls reached the sky, they were transformed into the Pleiades constellation (the "Seven Sisters"). This makes it all the more interesting as a choice for alien contact.

I saw this movie in the theater as a 10 year old, those notes will still pop into my head at random times for no reason.

The five airplanes are from Flight 19 that disappeared off the coast of Florida in an area that was known as The Bermuda Triangle. There had been aircraft and ships that have gone missing in this area for years. The Cotopaxi also went missing in this area as well in December 1925. While the five aircraft haven't been found the wreck of the Cotopaxi was found off St Augustine in 1985 but wasn't identified until 2020.

The line, "I hate these potatoes. There's a dead fly in my potatoes" was totally ad-libbed by that little girl. They thought it was so good they left it in.

Yep, the woman who plays Jillian, the mother of Barry, did play the mother in A Christmas Story. Melinda Dillon is her name, she sadly passed away in 2023.

The French UFO expert is played by Francios Truffeau, a prominent French director and one of Spielberg's influences.

Back in the day if you were a pilot an reported a UFO sighting, you could kiss your pilot license goodbye. That's why they didn't want to report one.

Roy leaving his kids and family is something Spielberg himself said he later regretted putting in the story. And if he'd made the movie after being a dad, he would have rethought that angle.

The Jaws theme in the music towards the end is always a nice easter egg

I say it every time, but I'll say it again... that air traffic control tower scene never gets old. Perfect written, perfectly shot, perfectly acted.
