3 Investments That Should Never Go In Your Retirement Portfolio

The premise of this video is good but there is a fallacy in assumption here with regards to gold. Investment in gold is only being compared to performance of S&P 500. James you wouldn’t tell your clients to invest everything in just a low cost index fund or etf that tracks s&p500 especially in retirement. If you compared the performance of fixed income or bonds or cash to s&p500 over the same 50 year span you find that bonds did way worse relatively yet stable less risky less volatile liquid assets like bonds that can generate income are an important part of every retirement portfolio. So if you were to take someone’s hypothetical 60-40 portfolio and include gold in the mix of lower risk available assets for income like bonds, fixed income, cash etc without taking away from the amounts that would be allocated towards growth, stocks, s&p or total stock market index funds/etf it’s very possible that gold could be a useful asset even within a retirement portfolio. It’s just another type of asset and opportunity for diversification.

If someone owns gold, it should be as an ETF or mutual fund. Those market products can be easily bought or sold. Physical gold requires finding a dealer who will pay cash and likely charges a hefty commission for transaction. Physical gold also needs a safe or lockbox for protection from theft.

"If you remove the time periods where gold performed well, you will see that it performed bad."<br>Wow. Incredible insight.

Rather than a binary analysis, it would have been more interesting to see how a blended mix of say 90% SP500 and 10% gold rebalanced annually would have performed. Given the low correlation, I'm guessing it would have smoothed out some of the downturns experienced in each asset class individually. You could also include rental real estate as an asset class to keep out of your qualified accounts due to the significant tax advantages available.

I’m new to investing and this really helped me understand where to begin with. There’s so much advice online, it’s easy to get lost. Glad this video made things clear and beginner-friendly. Planning to start small with index funds and building up from there. Any guidance in this regard would be much valued.

James I normally agree with you, but not on the subject of gold. I’ve never owned gold before this year. With inflation (which the CPI severely understates), the dollar losing value and economic uncertainty gold starts looking pretty good. Central banks, investment firms and investors are buying more gold than ever and in my humble opinion I don’t see this ending anytime soon.

Gold’s correlation with the stock market is lower than most other asset classes. Adding some gold to your stock portfolio increases Sharpe Ratio without hurting performance as much as bonds would.

Hey James! Love your content and appreciate your efforts to help people in retirement. I think this video falls short.<br><br>You say these assets should <b>never</b> be a <b>part</b> of your retirement portfolio. But then you talk about the bad things that could happen if you make any one of these options the <b>entire</b> or <b>majority</b> of your portfolio. The conclusion doesn't follow from the observations.<br><br>Hope that helps. Thanks again for all your efforts!

Thanks for the video. I started my Roth IRA in 1999 and converted two additional 401ks into it. Today at 58, 85% of my portfolio is in a Roth IRA. Therefore, I don’t and haven’t viewed it as a “special” retirement portfolio. I primarily trade safe options in it and brokerages only allow safe trades (no naked calls for example). We’re all unique and our money shouldn’t be protected from ourselves, simply because it’s for our retirement.

The government has $37+T in debt. It can only deal with that by austerity to pay it back (impossible with politicians), default (the world goes into depression), or inflation. The Feds have increased M2 an average of over 7% per year over the last 20 years, driving up asset prices, and that will continue indefinitely. CPI is a fake number - M2 is real. So pick your asset poison, and many are choosing gold. With the Feds forcing our hand with inflation and massive debts, real assets are needed as part of a diversified portfolio now.
