I think Jefferson is like a lot of idealists. They have great ideas but when it comes time to have the courage to live up to their ideals they fold in pressure to society or reality.

Here's my take: we can learn about his legacy in full, the good, the bad, and the ugly, without demonizing or sanctifying him. Remembering the good does not justify the bad, nor does acknowledging the bad undo the good.<br>Above all, we should remember his humanity. He was a human being just like us, a human that did some great things and some truly terrible things.

As a Black man, I can’t justify looking to Thomas Jefferson as a hero or even a good man for owning slaves and worse, forcing a teenage girl to bare his children, who he never publicly claimed as his own (read Madison Hemings interview in “Life Among the Lowly” for details).<br><br>But as somebody who respects history. His writings and declarations of freedom and republicanism are revolutionary for their times; and can apply universally, even if he didn’t intend it that way. I have no problem with learning or dialoguing about him.<br><br>The hypocrisies of his life match the hypocrisy of the United States of America as a whole, and the study of his life and works teach us about the true face of America……A Land of Contradictions.
