  Obviously another fairly heavy subject, please do share your thoughts after the episode. We&apos;ve got two very different sides to the story here but imagine both will spark a fair amount of debate. <br><br>Look after yourselves, as I say towards the end the next episode is likely going to be something very strange indeed...

  My grandmother was placed into an asylum by her mother who didn’t want to be bothered by her. She was there for over twenty years. My dad, her son, was placed into a children’s home where he grew up. Much later, the asylum contacted him to asked if he was willing to take her in because she didn’t need to be there. She had been unjustly thrown away by her mother.

  I went to a steampunk convention where someone gave a talk on reasons why women were committed: novel reading was code for interest in politics, most of the time. And then there were the cases where men would marry and not want to murder their wives so they&apos;d just have them committed so any inheiritance would go directly to them instead of the wife or back to the wives&apos; family. It&apos;s why the upper middle and upper classes would spent years arranging marriages: no one wanted to get stuck with a son in law who was just going to toss your daughter into an asylum when he got bored waiting to out-live her. The court cases around this time where that happened were pretty intense to read about.

  I live in WV and this asylum is about 30 minutes away from me. &nbsp;My grandma died in there back in September of 1959. &nbsp;You can tour it now and do overnight stays and flashlight tours at Halloween time. They have walk-through tours and special events. It is a beautiful piece of architecture. &nbsp;I don&apos;t believe it&apos;s haunted at all. &nbsp;It&apos;s just a sad piece of history in which a lot of people suffered and died, including my grandma. &nbsp;Nothing more, nothing less.

  My great grandma lived and died there. We visited frequently. &nbsp;She was clean, free to move about, &nbsp;involved in gardening and well fed.<br>The problem started when the government started housing criminals there.<br>More clients, but not more staff is ALWAYS a recipe for abuse.

  What an insane set of stories and sad circumstances. The fact that less than 100 years ago you could wind up in a place not as bad as prison for almost no reason at all to end up with an icepick through your eye is truly horrifying. Another fantastic entry, you do amazing work.

  I visited the asylum years ago and will never forget the room decorated with artwork by the patients. I cried and cried. Their pain was evident, and you could tell what happened to them through their artwork. I can still see some of the drawings. My heart aches for all who were housed there.

  The saying should be &quot;Good people make plans, then greedy people twist them for profit.&quot; Not just the greed of those profiting from the asylum taking on residents, but the greed of selfish family members who don&apos;t want to spend time properly treating the &quot;offending&quot; relative.

  As a mentally ill person, asylums scare the hell out of me. &nbsp;I think to myself if I&apos;d only been born twenty years earlier, I would have been placed in one of those bitches. &nbsp;There&apos;s an operating asylum in my home state of North Carolina called Broughton. &nbsp;It&apos;s a shit hole-full stop. &nbsp;I&apos;ve been in psych wards, but nothing like what they go through in that place. &nbsp;It&apos;s horrible. &nbsp;I remember seeing Broughton for the first time on a trip to the mountains of NC. &nbsp;It ruined my whole trip. &nbsp;So, I love ghost stuff, and I love to watch videos like this. &nbsp;I think to myself that I&apos;d love to visit these places, and indeed some of them would be very cool. &nbsp;However, I don&apos;t think I could do the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. &nbsp;I think it would freak me out way too much just because of the familiarity with being considered.... insane.

  I used to work for a company that ended up with patients from Weston State Hospital , aka trans Allegheny asylum. The stories he told terrified me. But of course the stories were of the treatment he received at the hands of his supposed caregivers. His favorite thing to threaten was &quot; locking us up in the guard room on Ward 3 and give us Vietnam shots in the ass&quot;.
