  At 15 he had the physique of a man. At 18, of a 29yr old professional footballer at his peak. He really was one of those players who peaked early. Yes, Ronaldo and Messi went on to usurp him, but at 18, he was better than both. Yes, I said it. Messi and Ronaldo did not really go into the stratosphere until their early 20s.

  He had as much natural talent as Messi and Ronaldo and as much potential. You can question work ethic and lifestyle, but really it was the injuries. You're talking about a footballer who broke his foot 3 times before his mid-20s and still had a career that easily puts him in the top 5 English footballers ever: that's the testament to the level of his talent. He's the most natural footballer I ever saw with my own eyes. The speed, strength and technique, coupled with his speed of thought, aggression and complete lack of fear was insane. I remember, as he was breaking in to the Everton team, watching him come off the bench most weeks at around the 60 minute mark and he'd change the rhythm and tempo of the game every time. He'd just get the ball and be so direct: whatever was the most dangerous thing in that moment, he'd do; whether it be running at defenders, through balls, running in to the box or a long shot, whatever. He just terrified grown men. This boy.  Sir Alex moulded him in to a more complete, better team player and Rooney always found ways to be effective but really, at Everton (1st spell) and the early days at United (before the injuries),  you saw the player that could have been. The one who was just better than everyone on the pitch, every time. He was split seconds ahead of every opponent in every situation and I believe it was the injuries that robbed him of those split seconds and that those split seconds, they're the difference.

  The chase down tackle and winning cross over half the pitch with the last kick of the game for dc united was one of the single greatest football plays I’ve ever seen. Only Rooney ❤

  Rooney is one of those players whose talent is only appreciated by his supporters and his fellow professionals; 99% of all the people who criticize Rooney are media personnel and/or those not good enough to play at a professional level. World class footballers who actually played with/against Rooney all say basically the same thing: in his prime he was unplayable, simply a monster on the pitch.

  I say this as a City fan, Rooney is still incredibly underrated by most football fans, he was an immense player, even if he did shin that overhead kick...

  Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo and Rooney. The four horsemen of Ferguson’s United. Arguably Rooney hit the hardest, even continuing their legacy into Mourinho’s stint. The club owes a lot to him staying even after Ferguson departed, beyond a legend for United!

  Rooney grew up with 2 options, he was gonna end up a gangster or a footballer, he became a footballer, he had the media on his arse all the time he faced injury’s that would make 99% of players have to retire, he proved everyone wrong he never backed down, the disrespect that he got and still gets is insane he always has been my favourite player and he always will be.
