That scene with Daryl on the motorcycle in front of the endless horde was probably part of what inspired Days Gone.

The quarry was interesting to me. You wouldn’t even necessarily have to trap them in there. The formation just works as a natural settling pool and they don’t have a natural out. Sounds echo all around them. They’d just cycle in there until they rot like flies in a sugar water trap.

Props to the actors who play the walkers. They are consistently on point, perfectly in character, never phoning it in.

I love the their decaying theory because it makes how lame they are in later seasons just a tiny bit more bearable

What I have never understand why they never used more spears and shields. Or improvised armour from car tires or some tough plastic material. Spears are easy to forge and very effective. The most used weapon of human history…

They never adapted architecture to divert herds. A simple packed-earth wall would have turned every one of them away.

A wall like Alexandria and Hilltop is useless against that sort of mass press of bodies. If you reduced the height by half, built a second wall 5’ behind the first and packed the space between them with dirt, mud, concrete rubble or sand, one linear foot of the wall weighs more than a ton. 10’ tall, 5’ wide and 50’ long would weigh something like 62 tons. A semi ramming into that kills the semi.

That farm could have been made into a fortress with just the timber and dirt around it.

Tree branches, dirt and mud at the prison would have turned that double fence into something the governor’s tank couldn’t go through. They had wood for building terraced gardens 4’ tall around the prison sitting on top of the hill. That stops walkers from getting near the building. Digging a trench from the creek brings water inside the fence.

All of that is Iron Age architecture. It doesn’t take a genius or even an architect to build. A wattle fence on the outside and a wattle fence on the inside with a lot of dirt in the middle stops walkers, even if it is just 4’ tall.

They could have built an outside wall past the farm fields at Hilltop. A timber wall, 5’ tall and 5’ thick with dirt packed between would have stopped Beta’s herd far enough back that their fire bombs would never reach the Hilltop’s walls and it would have stopped walkers from trampling their crops. They had years to build them.

That spot where Sophia got separated had a creek nearby, trees, and a lot of cars that could have built a semi-permanent encampment.

Burning walkers they put down would have provided fertilizer when mixed with soil. That would have meant higher crop yields. You never see them do that either. Those herds become a resource at that point.

A “hunting platform” 4’ off the ground, 8’ wide and 8’ long takes six plywood sheets and 2x4 framing. That’s 256 cubic feet and at 50 lbs per cubic foot, that foundation weigh five tons. Four more sheets of plywood makes it a spot where 4-5 people can stand and put down walkers with spears while out of their reach. Kill a bunch and then duck down and wait for the herd to wander off. That harvests walkers to burn for fertilizer and reduces the size of herds.

Spread out the population. A rampart wall around a cabin a half-mile up the road creates smaller pockets of survivors. That increases the amount of farmland and thins out herds, who have to go around it.

“The zombies have taken a back seat in the show to make room for human conflict” while I do see where people are coming from with that statement, I always think back to the saying from the show; fight the dead fear the living. For the most part up until the last seasons where we had walkers climbing walls, they were very predictable whereas humans you can never know, humans in general are far more unpredictable than walkers. But yes walkers should never be underestimated for sure

Speaking about hordes, i genuinely believe they could've set up some unreachable speakers in some wasteland or maybe even the cliff. They couldve activated them with some typa remote in order to divert them at will.
