  The French assault and raiding units could be especially savage because they were adapting under brutal pressure early in the war, and a lot of that fighting turned into close-quarters shock tactics, infiltration, and “get in, kill, grab prisoners, get out” madness. Effective in places, but absolutely barbaric.

  My grandpere was a poilu throughout the war. He came from Prague, through the Austro-Hungarian army, defecting to the Entente (somehow) and served France until the last of the war. He came to Chicago loaded down with all the PTSD he was able to hide, later taking it out on his wife and kids. He died before I was born, after a lifetime of breathing red dust as a master bricklayer. All I have is bits and stories handed down - unsatisfying and faint...but it lit the fires of my curiosity. I have been fascinated by the Great War in all its many fronts and campaigns.<br>There is a lot of info out here online, of varying truth and accuracy. Most of it sucks. But this video was very satisfying. <br>So thanks a lot for treating this subject with the respect it deserves.

  🇨🇵 During this war, France lost 1.3 million soldiers in combat... Some died later and were not counted. This represents, in just four years, more than double the number of soldiers killed in combat in the entire history of the United States... Rats thrived because the ground was a mixture of meat and mud... Approximately one billion unexploded shells are still buried...

  Come along the French countryside and always stop in the center of villages to look at the list of dead young men that left their lives in the trenches. The &quot;Monuments aux Morts&quot; is an astounding demonstration of the violence society threw on that generations of young men mostly farmers and workers of rural areas. I was particularly shocked at a few villages in Corsica, where dozens of young men went missing, never to become a father, a husband and depleted the island of fresh energy to build a wealthy future. War stole so many families, it drowned France in years of grief and misery.

  I love how into this subject You are. This is the full scale nerd deep dive.I feel like you&apos;ve wanted to make this video for a long time.And do it right. You covered every aspect. It&apos;s about &apos;how does it feel?&apos; What&apos;s the type of mindset to walk into the darkness? What&apos;s the mindset of being a century And looking out for these raids? The only thing I would have added is the fact that the flares made it much more difficult to spot something.<br>Because when it goes dark, you&apos;re at a disadvantage for a couple minutes, but even at those moments where they were flying flares all night, the constant moving shadows, because the flares are moving, you&apos;re on no sleep, and you&apos;re trying to see some moving shadows.<br>While the whole no man&apos;s land in front of you is a bunch of tall moving shadows, that&apos;s horrifying.   My grand-grandfather was a trench raider in Russian Imperial Army. Mad respect to French in Great War. &quot;Surrender monkeys&quot; memes made you dirty. Death Corp of Krieg is based on French mad lads from WWI.

Our great grandfathers left their farms to defend our soil, they died en masse thanks to the power of industry, to return as &quot;gueules cassées&quot;, shunned by the government for whom they fought<br>The &quot;monuments aux morts&quot; leave a chiling mark of this lost generation

  What has to be remembered is that to the British, and Americans. WWI is remembered as a tragedy, a war that shouldn’t have happened, a testament to man’s destruction of his fellow man. To the French, WWI was about survival. Most of the war on the Western front &nbsp;happened on their turf, for three years the French countryside was a Hell on Earth, the threat was real. &nbsp;It makes sense why Frances’s trench raiders were more brutal, they were defending their homes. It also makes sense why when WW2 rolled around they behaved the way they did.

  Many of us have great-grandfathers who fought in the &apos;Great &nbsp;War&apos;.<br>Their experiences were uniformly horrific.<br>Mine was mustard gassed.We can only guess the rest.<br>Rest in peace to all the poor victims.
