  I’m 79. &nbsp;About five years ago I started investigating music on YouTube that I’d ignored , from the 80’s onward. &nbsp;One of the great surprises to me was grunge. &nbsp;I especially was captured by the incredible, chord sequences, the vocalists and the subject matter &nbsp;especially by AIC and Pearl Jam. &nbsp;I agree about AIC and Layne’s voice. &nbsp;It is so tragic that the creative part of his soul took such a toll on him….and. Chris &nbsp;Cornell and Kurt. &nbsp;Chris’ work in Audioslave was another project that drew me in. &nbsp;But, like you, I find Layne’s voice, mixed with Jerry’s, to be the definitive sound of grunge for me. &nbsp;<br>I feel so blessed to have taken the leap to open my mind to new genres and artists. It’s been very rewarding. &nbsp;Who could have guessed that in my 70s I would discover a band that I respect as much as Pink Floyd? &nbsp;But I did, in Tool. <br>Floyd and Zep will always be my faves, but man, old farts &nbsp;who say the no good music came out after the 70’s or 80’s are just SO. WRONG. &nbsp;You just have to be open to new sounds. Embrace the unfamiliar.

  Jerry said his father saw them play this at a local pub and he said after that performance his dad had a new respect for him and Jerry said he could tell he was crying in the back of the Pub and then he just held his stetson up in the air and walked out of the pub

  A real haunting masterpiece. Jerry writing a song about his dad’s experience in Vietnam. Very powerful song. Layne brings perfect vocals and the music has such up and down dynamics to it. They definitely got the message and visuals communicated through ROOSTER. Great reaction Stacey to this jam and tough topic about WAR. superb job, Stacey keep the reactions coming. Loved it.

  &quot;Jerry Cantrell&apos;s father did hear the band perform this song. Jerry told the story in Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine: &quot;He&apos;s only seen us play once, and I played this song for him when we were in this club opening for Iggy Pop. I&apos;ll never forget it. He was standing in the back and he heard all the words and stuff. Of course, I was never in Vietnam and he won&apos;t talk about it, but when I wrote this it felt right... like these were things he might have felt or thought. And I remember when we played it he was back by the soundboard and I could see him. He was back there with his big gray Stetson and his cowboy boots - he&apos;s a total Oklahoma man - and at the end, he took his hat off and just held it in the air. And he was crying the whole time. This song means a lot to me.&quot;&quot;

  The song came out just after Desert Shield/Storm. That made it an anthem of sorts for many of us.

  My brother-in-law was a staff sergeant in the Marines and did two tours in Vietnam. I still have a photo of him sitting in the door of a helicopter behind the huge gun he used at Chu Lai AFB. The things he and his friends went through were nightmarish.
