  Im retired Alaska bush pilot. I've lived in Alaska 35 years. If you want to fly out, you'll need to secure your charter at least a year before your hunt. Two years ahead is ideal. If I was doing a hunt ,i'd drive up the  haul road (Dalton Highway) with a flat bottom boat and 40 hp jet. Its required that you walk 5 miles off the road before rifle hunting. I'd go up to one of the rivers that the haul road crosses. You can use a motor and those are easy miles to get past the five mile barrier. You may have to carry the boat to the river when you put in. Read up the on rules because they do change and there are emergency orders.

  Fifty years of successful hunting in Alaska. Spring, late summer, fall, and winter. And in places you are no longer allowed to hunt. Griz, blackbear, muskox, dall sheep, mountain goat, wolf, coyote, fox. caribou, all manner of waterfowl and upland game birds, and of course - parky squirrels. And while I occasionally used a .270, my regular hunting partner used only a .270 with handloads. It was the only rifle he owned. I liked buying, trading, and building rifles. He liked to shoot critters. Not that I didn't like shooting and eating, but I once worked for a gunsmith and learned really cool stuff about a whole lot of stuff regarding rifles and pistols, ammo, powders, metallurgy, etc., and every new toy brought new experiences to be explained and tinkered with. But my partner preferred to stay steady and true to the course with a Remington 700 BDL in .270 Winchester. In hindsight? It worked just as well as all of my various experiments, and better than some, and it was a whole lot less expensive.

  These two talking about the crazy weather in Alaska makes me really appreciate my first big fishing trip up there. 7 days of amazing bluebird days after 2 months of wet lol. The locals kept telling us "It is never like this!" I am sure my next trip will be a train wreck.

  Love how the 270 shoots , but after having found the body of my friends adult son on his caribou hunt , killed by a medium size grizzly boar ( pack still partially on his back yet torn apart ) 5 spent 270 cases on the ground and we found the boar about 130 yards away dead . Wildlife biologists said all 5 shots were killing shots in the zone …. Only issue is the 270 not substantial enough for bear and elk, moose , sheep all inhabit grizzly territory

  I learned about those sleds in Montana. I started using them in the south, and now a bunch of my friends and family use them. They're livesavers!

  It was -40 the other night and now its above freezing. The weather is the most dangerous part of Alaska.

  I’m a lifelong Alaskan. I was raised subsistence in the bush. I was a big game guide, and I spent the majority of my time and native villages when I wasn’t in the bush. And I can assure you that the number one caliber used by the most hunters in Alaska is the 30-30 they’re obviously more natives hunting in Alaska than any other demographic of people, and the vast majority of them are killing everything with a Winchester 94 30–30

  Great show been to Alaska mostly fishing with some small game and a deer hunt. &nbsp;This year fishing and black bear hunt planned. &nbsp;I did buy a 3006 Tikka SS this year. 😊

  Having grown up in Alaska and working in a hunting camp, I can tell you that stories about bear charges are far, far more common than actual charges. And of those charges that actually occur, the larger percentage are bluffs and not followed through on. Good episode. I carried a Winchester 30-30 and NEVER felt unsafe. The weather is truly the thing that causes more issues.
