For more than 16 years this Flood Outbreak has confused me, and today, we finally try and resolve that...

Oh also, the camera parts of this video were filmed right after I had surgery a few weeks ago, so don't worry about the Infection Form next to my eye, I'm not talking in iambic pentameter (yet)

"The outbreak was recent" makes me want to believe it was just purely happenstance. A derilect ship gets infected somehow, and drifts through space for a long enough time for it to crash on Trove. That's the one explanation I can think up in my head that'd even potentially make sense.

8:06 there are hints to show that the flood got into the interior of the world because of the covenant. The intro cutscene to the planet clearly shows a rather recently infected elite on the surface. I’m guessing that the covenant sent a force down to the surface to basically find the entrance to the inner part of the world and when they did, the covenant recklessly entered the interior and let their garrison on the surface either get infected following the ships in or simply forgot to lock the door. And the flood did follow the Spirit of Fire into the interior too. Not all of them latched onto the ship. They likely “flooded” into the area when the door was opened.

You know if red team used a bunch of steel chairs in the cutscene 'monsters' forge might have survived.

I can actually rationalize the Flood surviving for ya, and reasonably too.

We need to remember that the Halo rings did not destroy Flood matter. The rings obliterated nervous systems, depriving the Flood of food so it starved to death. In this weakened and starved state, Sentinels could move in and mop up the twitching remains so the surviving Forerunners could reseed the galaxy.

Since Trove was sealed off fully from the outside world, and the Sentinels of the Shield World kept inside for some unholy reason, the exterior never got polished clean - leaving a big, fat blemish on the place to just sit and fester, not enough food to grow but also never actually killed off.

The forerunners like storing the flood everywhere like they’re just a new tub of ice cream without finishing the old tub

My head canon is that the covenant knew about this planet long before they discovered humanity. They were responsible for releasing the flood which helps explain how they knew so much about the flood (In halo 1 and 2 they acted as if they’d had some experience with the flood in the past not in relation to the games). Then the flood just consumed all the wild life on the surface which was enough to create a proto gravemind.

The best explanation? Probably not. I’ve had that since I played the game back in 2010.

Maybe the original outbreak was only 99.9% destroyed on Trove (like those MrClean ads) and perhaps a single flood supercell lay dormant underground, and when the exterior surface was terraformed again by the forerunners, this supercell infected a small animal. The monitor on Trove then deemed the outbreak to be safely contained on the outer surface as it couldn’t infect any species with spacefaring capabilities (to form a full Gravemind)

16:37 one idea I thought of while listening to this is the idea that the rings didn’t cover the entire galaxy like we thought. What I mean by this is what if there was a small pocket between the section of the galaxy each of the rings cover had a minor error that left a small pocket unaffected by the rings activation. I feel like since we’ve been learning slowly more flaws of the Forerunners, and the fact that all the reasons you made wouldn’t be applicable, I feel that a flaw in the rings themselves makes more sense then a recent outbreak.

Last time I was this early, my Boi Mendicant Bias hadn't defected to the Flood

We are told several times through out the series that the rings only targeted “sentient” life. “It doesn’t kill the flood, it kills their food” I think is the quote. In the few shots there are of the rings firing, we always see things like animals and combat forms being destroyed, but not plant life. Even the footage at 15:43 shows the wave leaving behind the plants, trees and all that. So maybe while the firing of the rings did destroy the flood made of sentient life, biomass made from non-sentient life, could have possibly been spared. It loosely could explain why the blight land the surface had become survived. Then after either through the re-seeding efforts or the survivors inside the world came out assuming the flood had been destroyed were then infected because of spores. We never see any surviving forerunners or anything like that in the game. Maybe they became the biomass that made up the very large pro-to gravemind
