Also in competitive play, the best come back mechanics are the skill the player brings.

32:32 Video games as a way to discover that you can overcome challenges is such a brilliant observation, and exactly what I enjoy most about my favorite games!

Many of the issues with contemporary game reviews isn't even necessarily inherent to journalism. It's also part of a wider issue in the field in that the model at these outlets isn't actually journalism anymore; it's content farming.

Interesting to hear Electric say games aren't like film, but more like music, while knowing Kubrick said films remind him more like music, for similar reasons that Electric gave. Being a filmmaker and someone who is actively working on juxtaposing the gameplay mechanics of a video game with various elements of filmmaking, these talks are most inspiring

Also about the lore of games: Older games had the movie principle of „show, don‘t tell“. The bosses were super hard, you didn’t have to tell the players constantly how epic and big the fight was. You felt it.

The "players wanting all games to play just like games they're used to" thing is quite true, remember hearing and seeing for myself that Nintendo fans consider any old games substantially different than theirs to not have aged well; meanwhile for today's children who started out playing Fortnite and Minecraft, they can't get into these old Nintendo games at all and find them strange to play; like what he said about it not being an actual objective problem with the game, but instead a personal bias.

Mark saying that Video games as an art are closer to music than they are to film/books is something I never thought about but it instantly made so much sense to me. It also fits that one of the things I value the most in games is wether the soundtrack is good or not.
