This has been me and it’s been a great career. I’m 63 now and at the sunset stage. I’ve flown the “Big Iron” across the endless oceans and have been in the difficult situations repeatedly. But I still love the view out the window to this day. Once I retire at 65, I’ll go back to flight instructing at a small Part 61 school. Once a pilot, always a pilot.

This video is actually very accurate but misses the subjective element of how different people look at life and work. I’ve been at every stage of this story and am nearing the end. I certainly don’t look back at the early years as a miserable time, in fact quite the opposite. Flying in the bush to remote places in small aircraft is about as pure as it gets from a basic flying perspective. Some of my best friendships and memories came from those times. All this while flying 1000 hours a year. And yes, I can say the same for my early commuter airline days. After almost a decade, I found myself at a major airline where I have been for the last 30 years. I work about 10 - 12 days per month and fly all over the world. I spend more time with my kids than just about anyone I know. I am paid well because the responsibility of airline captain is no joke. However, when I leave the cockpit, I don’t bring the stress home and that’s not typical for a 400K/yr salary. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Retired airline pilot (1987-2021). Wouldn't change a thing. Started doing single engine charters in remote areas then joined a regional for 3 years. International airline flying followed starting on 747, 767, 787 and A380's. Never had to commute and lived a 20 minute drive from my home base in Sydney Australia. Best job in the world.

I’m an airline pilot. It’s awesome until you have kids. There is no getting back the time missed with your kids when they are young. If I won the lottery I would quit tomorrow.

fail to mention when you upgrade to captain your seniority tends to effectively reset again which give you worst schedules

Just came across the video great job!  For me it started as a 10 year old visiting the cockpit on a flight from Europe to the U.S. I get it the feeling is real. But For me the end is near,  finally reached the B-777 CA did all the rest. 38 years of flying. Now will retire next January at 61 and Its been great but cant wait. :)
