Emmit Smith needed 226 regular season games (81.2 yds/game). Walter Payton needed 190 regular season games (88.0 yds/game).  Barry Sanders played in 153 regular season games (99.8 yds/game)

My argument is that Emmitt Smith only has 3000ish yards on Barry and he played 5 more years. Barry’s worst year was like 1100 and that year the players went on strike so they played 5 fewer games. Barry is one of the greatest what if’s of the NFL.

Barry Sanders " A Football Life" episode highlights his underdog story. He didn't start at running back in high school until like the 5th game of his senior year because the starting RB got hurt and he still ran for over 1000 yards. Oklahoma State was the only Power 4 school that offered him a scholarship because of his small stature so he went there and was the backup to All American RB Thurman Thomas for 2 years. After Thurman was drafted to the Buffalo Bills, Barry became the starter and had the best season a college RB had ever had and won the Heisman before skipping his senior year and going on to arguably be the best RB ever. And Thurman Thomas also went on to have a college and NFL Hall of Fame career.

Barry averaged 1500+ yards per season across 10 seasons. He would have set a damn near unbreakable record. And the thing is, he never took hard hits because guys could barely tackle him, so he didn't get the same wear and tear as guys like Emmet.

The Dallas game was a 1991 playoff game, I was there and seen it happen with my eyes live, it was still hard to believe he made it thru all those guys... he averaged 1500 yards a season if he would have played 4 years that 6000 more that 15,000 is knocking on 20/21k. check his only season as a starter in college, set like 34 NCAA records, Heisman trophy and still has the single season college yardage record

Barry was running for his life every week because everyone keyed on him and he never had a great offensive line to run behind. He actually has the nfl record for rushing yards lost. He had great runs that hardly passed the line of scrimmage. It felt like he broke a long run on a weekly basis. He is the best runner ive ever seen.

I've been watching the NFL for about 65 years ..... Barry Sanders was a freak of nature, and he is the undisputed goat. He had it all, but his vision, burst and cat-like reaction time made him a nightmare for defenders. The kicker is that he did all of that on a team that went 74-79 during his tenure .... he did most of it on his own.
