SCAMMELL SCARAB ❤️<br>I remember when I was a kid in the 50’s and Scammell Scarabs were used in Helsinki, Finland as market place cleaning. They had a huge watertank and a there was a man sitting in front upper corner of the tank and had levers which opened the water sprays used to clean the market places after they were closed. I always wanted to be that man who was sitting high in that beautiful silver colored tank car.

I loved the little scarab, could put it anywhere. One thing not mentioned, it only had brakes on the rear two wheels so braking on a turn in rain was an adventure

Something quite serious you missed with the Scammell Scarab was the trailer coupling could be quite unreliable. Quite a few serious incidents were caused by the trailer going it's own way (often due to the cornering characteristics as mentioned). The issue was that the trailers had a fixed undercarriage that was lifted off of the ground when it coupled to the tractor unit. This fixed undercarriage had a pair of (normally) cast wheels that were unbraked, and the braking system was mechanical from the tractor unit to the trailer (the flat sheet of metal between the opening in the chassis). If the trailer became uncoupled, then it had 4 wheels on which only 2 had brakes, and those were inoperative. Modern trailers tend not to use wheels for the undercarriage (although some still do), but they are almost always air braked which will apply if the tractor and trailer become uncoupled.
