  When I was in the Navy I got put aboard a ship in Yokosuka Japan (specifically the blue ridge) and got to enjoy the beauty of Japanese culture. One time a friend I met on the ship took some friends and I out drinking at a &quot;nice bar&quot; he knew. It was in a slummy area but very nice and empty. We were drinking there for about an hour before 3 men in suits walked in and it clicked with me that it was a Yakuza bar. What surprised me was how nice they were. Bought a very nice bottle of whiskey and shared it with us before a bunch more showed up and they politely asked us to leave. One of the strangest things I&apos;ve experienced lol

  Someone told me the story of their time working in Japan. The only part I remember is this. He wanted to go to a bath house and picked one that looked really nice. He spoke little Japanese and the owner knew practically no English. The owner indicated he should take off his clothes and put on a towel or robe. He chose the towel. When the owner saw his tattoos he nervously motioned towards a private bathing room. When he entered, there was a group of tough looking men surrounding 1 old man in the bathing pool. He didn&apos;t want to seem rude by leaving so he removed his towel and got in. He nodded politely and smiled. They did not do the same except for the old man. He glanced at the tough guys and noticed they had even more tattoos than he did and some were also missing parts of their fingers. He had crashed a private Yakuza meeting. He said he had trouble controlling his panic after that. He thought about leaving but what if that was rude and he offended them? What if he offended them by not leaving? Then the Yakuza quietly passed him a cup of saki, which terrified him even more. He took a drink and passed it back and thanked them (arigato.) The old man stood up. The others followed suit. They put on their towels and headed for the door. As the old man passed he said, &quot;Nice tats.&quot; Then the others laughed and they all left. He said after that everyone one in the neighborhood was friendlier. 😅

  RE the bit about tattoos: The point of gang tattoos is that they create “path dependency,” eg. Most legitimate businesses won’t hire someone who has gang tattoos on their face, so once you’re initiated into the gang and tattooed it’s very difficult to decide that you want to stop being a gangster and reform yourself. It’s really quite smart in its own right, and also very sad for people who want to change their lifestyles and leave their gangs.

  I&apos;m certain my ex&apos;s old man was Yakuza. He seemed pleasant, although initially wasn&apos;t a fan of me until I brought him beer and whiskey from the base. She said he was a truck driver but he never worked and they lived in a sweet house. HE also had a summer home on the coast that no one else could stay in lol. She no shit dropped her phone in the toilet at the train station. I told her I&apos;d fish it out but she called him from a pay phone and some dude rolled up with about $600 in yen so she could buy a new one. &nbsp;Some weeks later, a guy backed into her car and started some shit with us. I was in a pickle because I couldn&apos;t slug the guy without getting jacked up by the JPs and the military. She called her old man crying while we were arguing and swear he appear out of thin air with three &quot;coworkers&quot;. She told him what happened, the three guys pulled dude to the side and soon he was bowing and apologizing lol. Tell you what, I made sure never to get on her bad side. To this day I wonder what life would&apos;ve been like if we hadn&apos;t moved on. I doubt delivery guys have clout like that. Then again, he may have been employee of the month.

  I find Simon’s logical cowardice to be such a breath of fresh air. I hate when ppl try to act tough and say they’d fight or act up when really we all have survival instincts we don’t have to neglect lol
