So I checked in the trained model, so in theory, you should be able to enlist in the code and run it, and it should play Tempest pretty well (it’ll take a few minutes to settle into it, but should be obviously talented right from the start).

You just need MAME on your path, then go into the source folder and run

python3.14t -Xgil=0 Scripts/main.py

(You can use any Python; that’s just the fastest version. You will need to set up the requirements in requirements.txt but I think pip can do that based on the txt file. IT’s numpy, torch, 1-2 other things).

Then, once the server is running, launch a MAME client:

mame tempest1 -skip_gameinfo -autoboot_script c:\users\dave\source\repos\tempest_ai\Scripts\main.lua -nothrottle

(Update the path to your source folder wherever you cloned it).

You can run as many or as few games as you like!

My grandfather taught me to hang out with people that know more than I did, as I would learn more. That's why I am here. Great lesson as always.

Dave's real ingenuity here is creating a way for the LLM to escape from local optimum and to continue to seek a global optimum. This problem plagues LLMs in many ways and Dave's feel for the parameters to create and a strategy of exploration was insightful. Bravo maestro

My brain hurts just thinking about what must be in Dave's brain. And his brain is actually thinking about all that stuff! Impressive!!

Dave, how you eventually taught your AI to play TEMPEST just proved to me that teaching an AI is like raising children. Considering you have children, this probably not news to you.
This tells me that critical thinking and communication skills are a MUST for raising AI models.

I was riveted even though I had no idea at any point what Dave was talking about.

Given the current state of Windows 11, Microsoft really need people like Dave back on board to sort out the mess.

"A strange game. The only winning move is not to play."

I think it was 1988 when I heard a talk by NN researcher John Anderson discussing how getting the problem representation right would do almost all the work. Over the years, I've seen that play out over and over. Thanks for the latest example.

56 years young this year, I'm impressed that my 12 year old self knew polar coordinates (and attention) well enough to do very well at this game in a smelly arcade. It took a lot of quarters, but this was one of my faves!
