The Nordhavn Disaster Nobody Saw Coming (it's all over, brand in trouble)

Nordhavn (a respected builder of ocean-crossing trawlers) abruptly discontinued its two more affordable models—the 41 and 51—and closed its Turkish factory on July 28, 2026, after only 54 boats were built. The cause was Turkey’s extreme inflation combined with an artificially strong lira, which made production costs in dollar terms unsustainable. Fixed-price contracts became loss-making for the yard. Nordhavn’s parent company covered the extra costs, finished every boat at the original price (no customers lost deposits), then ended the Turkish partnership. This was a strategic cut rather than a collapse. Nordhavn continues building larger models in its established Taiwan and China yards, including a revived 46 Mark II and plans for a new 56. Main impacts: The relatively affordable entry-level Nordhavn is gone.
Used 41s and 51s may become more valuable due to limited supply.
It highlights currency/economic risks for other boat brands that build overseas.

The brand survives intact after protecting its customers and reputation.

I appreciate that Nordhavn stood by its clients. They did the right thing. This will make Nordhavn a stronger company. I would still own one and just maybe I will have that opportunity.

As a former boat owner, the other factors that are killing the recreational boat industry include escalating costs -- for slips -- for fuel -- for insurance -- for maintenance and repairs -- for boats that you paid too much for and whose real value has dropped below the loan amount that you're still paying off.

We purchased hull #40 which was built in Turkey. Start to finish PAE/Nordhavn stood by the contract and delivered an absolutely stunning class A vessel. Speaking to Dan Streech and Jim Leishman throughout the process was always professional and heartfelt. Building a new boat is not easy and despite the Turkey factory challenges the quality was excellent and we are very pleased. Nordhavn met all commitments. I 'm proud to now be in the Nordhavn owners group and ready to join the 2026 Taco run in November. Thank you team Nordhavn .....
This is a very good video thank you!

I commend Nordhavn for the strategic shutdown of Turkish yard . I'm a boatbuilder in New Zealand and have worked on many Nordhavn boats regarding maintenance and refits. They are in my mind the clear leader of production boats. They are good and very robust. I hope an entry level model will make it back for those that can experience quality on water with great sea going attributes.

A really great and informative video. I suspect you also explained what happened at Bering Yachts. Cheers 🙏🤙

Nordhavn are not the only boatyard to fall foul of the Currency Problem with Turkey. It is a shame that such good boats are the ultimate victims. Their owners seem to have been considered in this case but other yard collapses have taken the customers into debt.

Too much drama! A video that could be 4-5 minutes to explain a basic concept. In any case. The two models will likely resurface soon in another country be it Taiwan, China or somewhere else.

What a honourable stand that Nordhavn done ✅ towards its loyal customers, and the Turkish yard did great job in honouring the well known Nordhavn reputation, nevertheless harsh strategic decisions has to be made and risk mitigation need to be taken, containment is the key for survival,
And I do strongly believe that Nordhavn have to continue building affordable hulls as the N41&N51 to maintain this current customer segment and not to loose the momentum,
Nordhavn might not noticed that tier reputation reached the Middle East region due to the fact of the Turkish yard effect, and line of potential customers in the Middle East start to really consider Nordhavn N41&N51 as a perfect solution to hub between the Arabian Gulf passing the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea to get in to the Red Sea and transit Suez Canal to reach the Mediterranean!
Which will take roughly 21days give or take in a modest speed of 8-10 knots.

So yes take a break…but don’t quit the models…still much to conquer and explore!

I wonder if the same issue with Turkish inflation and the artificially propped up lira is what blew up Bering yachts in their difficulties with nautistyles too. Though they operate from a different area, the Antalya free zone, which would have removed the problem from the tax exemption removal, they still would have faced pressure from the cost increases due to the inflation and propping up of the lira.
