The pacing in Cerebus’ storytelling has always been uneven. There is no artist like him and Gerhard who did the background art. Dave Sim would often write in English and Scottish accents into the speech balloons especially in “Volume 11: Guys” which could be funny at times but hard on the eyes.

I have also found a Cerebus to be a difficult read. I collected a small portion of the books a decade ago.

If you think this story was a challenge, the later volumes get almost unreadable. I love Dave Sim and Gerhard’s artwork. But the books are uneven. Got to meet Gerhard once and he was very kind.

"High Society" does get pretty dense. "Church & State" is loooong but most of it passes quickly... pages & pages of panels with little text or action. Then the later stuff, where it's just literally text with some illustrations in a comic book format, I tried but ultimately never bothered.

What did you expect jumping in at book ?
Book through to the end is a tour de force .
One of these days when you actually have time to enjoy a story maybe try it again ,cause this time around you missed the point. Its not supposed to be a chore or work. Its meant to be savored.
Dont forget these originally came out as individual comic books not the phone book you have in your hand.

Cool video...ive meant to dive into my Cerebus "phone books" for quite a while. Im a little intimidated now, heh.
I always assumed his parodies of mainstream comics was just gentle ribbing, but maybe there was more going on

I was told that Dave never actually read manga (Saw off E-bay he had did an Akira parody using Cerebus. Apparently he wants to do an Naruto one too!) but going through the series
myself only having read half of it, there was allot of it I feel had inspired both Berserk and Monster. You'd have to had read the 1st Phone-book but there's an nobleman called Lord
Julius whom Cerebus is hired by to protect 'who you see here' from an Assassination plot and guess what? In Berserk you have the MC Guts being hired to kill an Noble-man
who's also named Lord Julius! There were multiple parts in the original Phone-Book I feel Miura used for inspiration like the shot of Cerebus mounted wearing an cloak highly
similar to Guts' own while rain pours on him like that shot from 'Lost Children' and the leader of the Assassins trying to op Lord Julius dressed like Femto angled in a position like
the 'Guardians of Desire' complete with labyrinthine corridors; but really struck me was Church & State. Just looking at that cover of Part2 with the image or a forlorn Cerebus
clutching an orb staring into a pitch-black sky while walking across an ground made of eerie faces, I sorta thought that looked like The Eclipse in a way. I won't spoil it, but while
no major character or characters get sacrificed there is an Ascension involving the MC were that Wall of Faces is pulling him up higher and higher while he's desperately hanging on
while a shattering cosmic event occurs, that effects the whole outer world so major Berserk comparison their! Naoki Urasawa of Monster & Master Keaton I feel was inspired
by the more still-life, suburban aspects of Cerebus for if you compare Jaka's Story and Melmoth to say Monster that style of story-telling/background work is nigh identical to
what's being shown in Sim's work. Sure its a vastly different story but I think Sim's choice to move away from fantasy Sword and Sorcery, telling an grounded suburban saga with a
psychological edge helped set the stage for story's like Monster and so forth. While I wish Sim did an better story, instead of continuing to do experimental social-commentary's that
end getting in 'Hot-Water' I can't deny the impact this series had on the comic industry. Heck, Bone wouldn't exist for he had actually helped Jeff Smith get off the Ground!
So really I think despite everything I think the series should be protected. Just make sure you be discreate about certain parts of the 'Reads' phone-book! I don't like it either.
(Cerebus does have a few softer moments with his personality, than just being angry and vindictive all the time. You'd see that if you manage to get to High-Society's end.)

That collection/"phonebook" has likely risen up in price quite a bit in the last few months. All the collections here in the UK have. You cannot get a cheap one anymore - even in horrible condition! You might wanna check online and see whats its worth :)
