I grew up through the 70s and have been going back to eating the way we did back then and feel much better. Dropped about 20 pounds just changing my eating habits.

The question is not what did they eat, the question is, what did they not eat. Snacks.

School lunches were much better in the 1970s AND were served by lunch ladies who prepared them by hand, not prepackaged, thrown in microwaves, and shoved under heat lamps. I wish you could do one on 1970s school cafeteria lunches. And kids had recess and PE, which burned calories. Pizza day was my favorite!!

Food was probably real back then. Our food now is processed, GMO, and make off a printer!

This is SO accurate. I was a teenager in the early 70s. We hardly ever ate outside of the 3 meals a day, except we always had dessert in the evenings. Freshly baked or a small bowl of ice cream. My brother, sister, and I were all in the slim/skinny category, but we always had plenty of food.

We ate what mom cooked. Eating out was a rare treat. Stayed outside all day. If you were thirsty you got a drink from the garden hose. Being inside was punishment. Came in when the street lights came on!

There were a few things that were drastically different then.

1. The portion sizes were way smaller. Nothing was low fat or low carb. Creamy beef pasta, casseroles covered with cheese, etc. We also had a lot of Chinese food, but again the serving sizes weren't huge the way they are now.

2. Almost all our meals were eaten at home. Going out was only an occasional thing, I know of people who almost never eat at home. And restaurant food always has more crap in it than when you make it yourself.

3. Late night snacking or just snacking in general was done a lot less.

4. Sugary drinks like pop was only drank occasionally. And all the sugary coffee drinks like iced cappuccino and all that wasn't even available. People drank coffee and tea in those little cups.

5. And finally, people moved a lot more. Society has never been this inactive at any point in history. No one sat and did gaming for hours on end. There was no internet and on demand TV shows and movies. We had to catch our favorite shows when it aired live. If we missed it, too bad. We didn't get a VCR until the 80s.

It's a combination of insanely larger portion sizes, more crap in the food especially sugar, and far less exercise. I work as a personal trainer for my career. I'll be honest. I don't think I could have had a career as a personal trainer in the 70s. There wouldn't have been a need for it. Back then, only actors and other celebrities hired personal trainers. Now it's everyday people that need trainers.

I grew up in the 70's. Hersey bars were larger than the single ones you buy today, but we didn't eat them every day. We ate a lot of fruit for snacks. We had cake for dessert, but it was a smaller size piece and only after we finished our main course. A big difference is the amount of exercise we got. We walked or rode our bikes to the neighborhood store. Even grown-ups walked to the neighborhood store instead of driving. We played outside on bikes or played ball even in the winter. We usually only watched TV after dark or during bad weather. Most parents did hard manual labor at work which worked off a lot of calories. Fast food was a treat, usually when we went on a day trip or vacation. I loved getting pizza at school because it was a rare treat at home. My mom always cooked food from scratch and I still cook a lot of food from scratch because it tastes a lot better. We had a huge vegetable garden in summer that we ate out of, and my mom canned and froze food for the winter. The whole family burned off a lot of calories working in the garden. It was a whole different lifestyle back then.
