  ​I was an extra on Saving Private Ryan, playing a German soldier on some days and a US Marine on others. We’d spend hours stuck in those landing craft, so by the time the camera rolled, the seasickness was 100% real. The moment that stuck with me most was playing a German rifleman high up in the sand dunes. Loaded with blank ammo, I remember looking down at the guys stumbling out of the boats, weighed down by soaked gear and trudging through the heavy sand, and thinking it must have felt like shooting fish in a barrel. It was an unforgettable experience—just like being an extra on Braveheart, which was also filmed here in Ireland.

  When SPR was first released, I sat next to my father in the theater.  Dad was a Marine Korean War veteran and bronze star recipient who saw a lot of combat at the famed battle of the Chosin Reservoir.  During the Omaha Beach scene, from the corner of my eye I could see him sitting ramrod straight, with both hands gripped tight on the arms of the chair.  On the drive home after the movie, he told me the scene looked and felt so real that he had a visceral reaction to it.  Dad never spoke of the war, but that movie unlocked something in him and, for the first time, he opened up about his experience in Korea.   It was an emotional ride home, with lots of tears shed,-- and one I'll never forget.  Talk to any combat veteran and to a man they'll tell you.... there is nothing glorious about war.  Saving Private Ryan absolutely captured that sentiment.

  The opening sequence was traumatic enough. But now that I’m a Camera Assistant, the fact that all of that was shot on actual film, underwater, pelted with sand and dirt in the rain is far more terrifying.

  Growing up in the 1950s, every single household in my town had WWII veterans. They came home from the war, got their educations on the GI Bill, married, and raised families. No one ever talked about the war. Ever. This movie gave me a glimmer of what those veterans went through.

  The first time i saw this movie was in my ninth grade world history class but we were only able to watch maybe 45 mins of it because class was over so once the day was over i said to myself ive got too see the rest of this movie and my mom took me to blockbuster and i rented it and its been one of my favorite movies since
