Just read Don Bluth's memoir, and he confirms how terrified everyone was of approaching Milt Kahl when he was working - "Long on talent, short on patience" is how Bluth describes him. He also talks a fair bit about his rivalry with Marc Davis on 'Rescuers' - every time they met in the halls he'd tell Davis "You just wait, my villainess is going to be nastier than yours." Apparently it got so heated some of the younger animators started taking bets on who'd win.

For the record, I met Marc Davis in San Francisco and asked about the story of Milt and Frank Thomas training him to animate and he scoffed and said he was taught to animate by Grim Natwick on Snow White. He also said Milt Kahl was the greatest animator ever and he said never believe anything you read in a Frank and Ollie book and that he didn't talk to them anymore. Even after all those years you could see the resentment.

Amazing detail on not only his masterful skill as an animator, but also his personality. He is the greatest of the animators and the best character designers, which influence Bluth, Bird and Deja in the way they design characters. One thing you forgot to mention is that the reason he loved working on Sword and the Stone the most is because he designed all the characters. Every character was Milt's design, which is why every character has a consistent design because it is all his. It is a shame that his best piece of animation came at a time when the scripts were weak. This video was full of detail and I was hooked.

Explosive indeed!
Look at how he reacted when a young Richard Williams asked him the ridiculous question on whether or not he listens to classical music or something while he works

I seem to recall hearing that Milt’s animation work at Disney was a major influence for the animators at Studio Ghibli when they were developing their own in-house style.

Thanks for sharing. I call them the first generation of traditional animation in Disney history. Their aesthetic precision and talent was timeless. When they teamed up to work together as a 9-person team, it was an explosion of talent. In fact, the nine Disney elders spawned the next generation after them: Don Bluth, Glen Keane, Mark Henn, Andreas Deja, John Pomeroy... and many more

I never realized that Milt Kahl/Richard Williams animation was based on Richard's own artwork.

How sad that Milt left a legacy of bullying and abusing others. So many business men in todays time can be the same way.

Thx for the great job on this piece
