  Ive never seen or heard such intricate detail about the battle of Gettysburg. One might assume the Union army&apos;s victory at Gettysburg came from superior numbers alone, but it&apos;s quite clear that Meade and his generals were quite competent coupled with the resolve of the Union infantry.

  Meade&apos;s contributions to the Union did not just end at Gettysburg. He was a huge chunk of why the United States won the war period.<br><br>People need to understand that Meade, in so many ways, was the first major correct pick of the entire war on the Union&apos;s part. Grant and Sherman were dominating the west from the beginning, but in the east, after so many past failed generals who were obsessed with their political careers, and eyeing a chance to run for office after the war was over, Meade was the first pick who won a big battle, and he kept his position until it was over. He was pragmatic, sensible, introspective, and while his cautiousness tends to paint him to be more ineffectual by critics, the fact is that he did have more of Grant&apos;s mentality than some may think. He dealt irreversible damage to Lee by simply putting up one of the best defensive lines in any American war, and he did genuinely try to pursue Lee after the battle was over. But his army just couldn&apos;t realistically just launch a new battle after Gettysburg due to what they had just went through (bloodied, starving, thirsty, and in need of ammunition).<br><br>But after Grant came in and took over the Eastern Theater, Meade&apos;s performance by bringing Grant&apos;s plans to life was not just vital, but it arguably couldn&apos;t have happened unless he was commanding the actual army itself. Yes, he did have multiple failures and mistakes in the Overland Campaign and Petersburg such as underestimating Sherridan, and interfering with the Battle of Crater, but multiple Union generals made tons of bad decisions during the final campaigns to destroy Lee, and it becomes clear that when given a specific direction, Meade was the one who, along with Grant, could finally destroy the force keeping the Confederacy alive. How it must have been for him to finally be comanding the charges into Petersburg when the lines were finally broken as April began in 1865.<br><br>Grant did like to say that often the best leaders are not those who step up to plate with their chests held high, but often those found at the right time who simply know what to do and perform their jobs correctly, and personally, I like to think Grant was thinking of Meade along with other Union leaders when he was saying stuff like that.

  This is a brilliant way to go about showing the battle. I&apos;m especially fond of this perspective after recently reading Meade at Gettysburg. It shows how well Meade did not just organizing the march north but also making decisions based off what information he had. Well done Jeffrey!
