After 1981, Harley-Davidson put thicker head gaskets on the Sportster engines to lower the compression so they use lower octane fuel. I own a 1982 & 1993; until I learned that, I used 91-93 octane. When I replaced the head gasket on the 1982, it was coated with carbon 2mm thick. The sparkplugs told the same story. Back to 87 & they run great, 80k miles on the Iron Head & 17k miles on the Evo.

The worst fuel i ever got was from an Arco station , the bike ran great before I filled up at an Arco and run great as soon as I got that junk out and put soom good stuff in from a 76 station where I usually get fuel .

I’ve used Costco premium fuel in my 2025 Street Glide Ultra probably 99% of the time and Exxon the 1% I’m not close to a Costco. I use Sta-Bil when I can’t ride for 3-4 weeks. I’ve ridden 7100 miles since I bought it with no fuel problems.
