I Played the French Defense for 30 Days: Here's What I Found

Long-time French player here!  There are three major setups against Nc3: dxe4 setups (also known as the Rubinstein), Nf6 setups (the Classical), and Bb4 setups (The Winawer).  Nf6 is the most common at high levels these days, but if you run into Bg5, the fun way of playing it is called the MacCutcheon, which is playing Bb4 and seeking to damage white's structure.  The lines are super weird and fun, and Black can very easily gain an advantage just by being more familiar.  The main line after 3. Nf6 is e5, after which White has a lot of possible setups, and Black has lots of possible setups against each of those setups, but the general theme is that Black either undermines the center or plays on the queenside while White attempts to overwhelm on the kingside.  The cool way to respond to the main line in the 3. Nf6 line is with 7... Be7, after which Black gets a ton of flexibility and play, including Stonewall setups and fianchettos, and queenside pawn storms if White castles queenside.  Very much appreciate the French content--hope you keep experimenting with it!

I've been playing the french my entirelife, and I don't understand why people automatically think it isnt great, without trying it. The french is an amazingly resilient opening with its own ability to get really easy wins

The KIA against the french can be very dangerous for black have a look at some of Fischer's early games and he makes it look like forced checkmate! :)

I  personally like playing Winawer Bb4 but the only backdraw is learning the theory and strange set up of white some times with h3 and Rh3 the Rg2 and so on

Against the Paulsen you should try the Winawer (3...Bb4). It is extremely fun and dynamic (probably the most fun french variation). You sometimes gambit a pawn, but in return white gains huge structural weaknesses and a king with no safe squares. ChessBase India has a video with Anish Giri abt it I think.

Hy just a bit for anyone who want to known or study French and opening in general I would suggest hanging pawns channel as he deep dives in many different lines of the opening and if you want to pratice opening on a deep level and understand ideas then you should watch hanging pawns .
