Funny thing, a year later Eder went on to play for Lokomotiv Moscow and despite not being a prolific goal scorer by any standard, he managed to score the desicive goal that brought the club its first league title in 14 years. Eder's career was literally "scores the most important goals, refuses to elaborate and leaves"

Portugal lost in 2000 and in 2004 spectacularly and won in 2016 unspectacularly. It is what it is.

Best moment of the whole tournament for me is a Portuguese fan screaming: "chuta daí, caralho"

Now that I think about it, Eders story is such a unique one. Martin Tyler’s commentary said it best: “the striker who rarely scores, scores the biggest goal in the history of the Portuguese national team.”

Before then, nobody knew him. After that, nobody talked about him. He just popped up, and did what Ronaldo, Figo, Rui Costa, Eusebio, Nani etc didn’t do. Score the winning goal in a final. Incredible really

I was a baby at the time so I don't remember it, but from what my parents told me, the 2004 Euros were very painful for the country. At home, and we lose in the final to Greece. And after that, the hope for a international trophy was very low, as the golden generation of Figo, Rui Costa and Deco (and others) was gone.

But then this tournament happened. The squad was nowhere near the squad we have now, but our manager said they were only coming back home after a month. And it happened.

That Eder goal is legendary. A whole country united. A beautiful moment. Will never forget it.

the best player in our team, at least in my opinion and many other portuguese, was Ruí Patrício. the man was so overlooked but he is the one and only reason anything happened. he was the best player in the final and it wasnt even close no matter what fifa says, he saved us vs poland, kept bales longs shots all out, and was actually one of the main leaders for most of the time. he IS the reason we have a trohpy at all, and i dont see many people giving him the credit.

Everyone forgets the hero story of Rui Patricio the goalkeeper of Portugal, who made incredible saves tru out the tour, especially in the finals
