Something that I don't see addressed too often are stories where the gods don't need faith/belief to exist. That they are fundamental to the world, and that their patronage is more akin to a gardener who sees the sapient species that worship them as beneficial organisms in their gardens. Because the idea that gods need faith is a pretty recent one.

The role of a jester in a kings court is to break the rules of decorum and show the king where he is wrong. A trickster god would likewise have the role of breaking the rules of divinity and intervening when more serious gods can't.

The back and forth between Wax and Harmony is one of the best subplots that Sanderson has ever written. My favorite part is when Harmony is explaining to Wax that he avoids intervening too much to avoid terrible unintended consequences Wax retorts that as a god Harmony could find a balance to intervene as much as possible while avoiding the worst effects, to which Harmony basically responds “What makes you think that’s not what I’m already doing?”.

I really liked a phrase from the god of Futurama that kind of sums it up "It isn't easy to be a god, if you do too much people become dependent, if you do too little they loose hope, you have to have a light touch, like a safecracker or a pickpocket"

Parallel to the Atlas story, All-Star Superman has him creating a simulated Earth to see if humans could survive without him as he's facing his mortality. Lex also ends up accessing all of Kal El's powers and almost loses his narcissism due to finding out Supes low-key is aware of EVERYTHING at all times and Lex develops a brief moment of super empathy.

To be honest the central flaw of this essay is that it accepts the modern and post-modern assessments of gods just being stories made up by humans.
In old myths Gods constantly interfered, their legends constantly changed and shifte, their myths can contain character development.
These rules layed down are entirely aribitrary.
Furthermore, while gaining power and distance would make someone perhaps less empathetic to other humans, that itself is a human trait.

Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson has the best line from any god justifying his actions. "I did do something, I sent You."

2:48 Rick Riordan's gods are incredibly interesting, being the angel on humanity's shoulder the gods can do almost everything for humanity but, one thing they can't do is fight the devil on humanity's other shoulder because we quite literally stand between them.

6:55 It doesn't have to be all or nothing. You could provide for them enough so they don't die or get too traumatized, but they still are allowed to handle on their own the things they can. As they develop, they'll gradually need you less and less. Like a parent.
