  My Great Grandmother was like this. Looking back I wonder how much they paid for their land and how. In the 80s they had a 3 car garage, a massive 3 bedroom house with a full “done” basement that had a large laundry area and another 4 rooms down there, one a bar with a fireplace and root cellar. She grew fruits and vegetables had a whole lot that canned and frozen. She was an old Irish immigrant(she stood 4’11) who was beyond reproach. She mostly grew her own food. She didn’t have animals so I’m not sure how she got that but what she needed she grew. She used to sew my clothes so I had clothes. She was quite an extraordinary woman. My uncle had MS and wasn’t a small man but she took care of him pretty much by herself after my great grandfather died. For at least 25 years

  Thank you Silas I grew up in the west indies some houses still have cisterns and we grew our own vegetables and plenty houses had chickens and would share the extra eggs i had the best childhood ,now I&apos;m retired &nbsp;going back to some of the old ways.

  I have so much gopher damage that now I do all my growing in recatangular storage containers. &nbsp;Round pots waste space. &nbsp;I&apos;m trying to mimic forest growing conditions as close as I can. &nbsp;To the cheapest potting mix I can buy, I add kitchen scraps, scoops of native soil for microbes, and earthworms. &nbsp;This is my 2nd growing season. &nbsp;My tomatoes are loaded with green fruit.

  Not true about aluminum foil protecting from squash borers. I wrapped mine just to find larvae eating my squash stem 24 inches above the ground, way above the foil. Now I grow my borer vulnerable plants under insect net and pollinate manually. 100% success.
