GEN Z Reacts To Why Aren’t Characters Iconic Anymore? (THIS IS DEEP!)

When people went to go watch Starwars in theaters in 1977 they watched the movie, actually paid attention to it. Then they left the theaters and they talked to each other about it for weeks/months. They weren't paying attention to phones. They weren't distracted by their phones as soon as the theater lights came back on. They didn't just make a post online about it and then move on to the next thing.

The older ones were all part of what is called the hero story.

The real problem is that there is no new ideas. Everything is just a re-hash of something we already had. Give us new ideas and new heroes and then they will become iconic.

Since most of the shows I like have moved to channels that I don’t get and we refuse to buy more channels, I spend most of my time on YouTube

I remember seeing every movie in the theater and still wanting more. Now, I'd still like to go, but I'm not moved to anymore. Maybe once a year? Not even that. So many people have said the same.

Just started the video, but possibly the biggest reason that iconic characters aren't as big a thing today as they used to be is too much choice.

Back in the day, we only had a few channels on the television and there were only a few movies that got big attention at a time. Also, why so many of us from those generations have similar childhood stories or cultural references, no matter where we are from.

Nowadays, with internet access so wide spread, everybody can look for and only watch/listen to the stuff that is in their interests. Add to that the fact that media is finally working in color/nationality varieties that are more true to the real world.

Then again, it seems like most of what is coming out of Hollywood these days is nothing new. They seem to be mostly putting out sequels, prequels, reboots, reimagines, live actions versions of cartoons, cartoon versions of live action, digging out characters from source media that aren't well known and making them famous.

And so many of the younger people are making people they see on social media the center of their pop culture experience these days. To the point that some social media influencers are now legit parts of the entertainment/business industry.

There's so much content it's been basically commoditized. Short movie runs at theaters and streaming along with Hollywood's biggest investments being existing IP means most just go through a cycle and are forgotten.

The reason characters were more iconic back in the 1970s and 1980s compared to now; is because back then we had a saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” So the characters were more real. If it was meant to be a character that was supposed to be hated. They gave you a reason to hate that character. Whereas now, words do seem to hurt everyone. So now writers are so afraid of hurting someone’s feelings that characters have absolutely no personality. New writers seem to have forgotten that in order to love the protagonist, people need an antagonist (villain) to hate.

You always need something or someone to compare the main character to. For example: if the main character is good, then you need a character that is evil. If the main character is rich, then there should be characters that are poor.

You also have to show the character transforming from one type of character into another. For example: in the movie Star Wars/A New Hope, Luke Skywalker starts out as a typical teenager that lives with his aunt and uncle and does chores around the house. But by the end of the film, he’s fighting in a major battle.

Wonder woman(kinda Carter) had a huge impact on my childhood, in a time when there weren't a lot of female hero figures, she showed me a woman can be beautiful and strong.

I think the sign of being an icon is when you've reached the point of cultural saturation such that even people who've never seen/read the source still get the references and those things tap into the zeitgeist. But that doesn't always happen right away. Sometimes a potential icon is ahead of its time, waiting for the right audience to come along.
